hi, i got a 62kg, paprika red all over, i want to paint the roof white, does anyone know if or what color white the roof of paprika red ghias were. thanks for your help...greg
Most likely L87 Pearl White. That was the white used on most of the range back then.
DH
Paprika red L452 had the following combinations: 57 silver uphostery in cloth, 75 silver beige in leatherette, L87 pearl white wheels, steering column tube L466 silver beige, gear shift and handbrake lever L467 basalt grey and seat frame silver beige. From this i would assume that the top colour was pearl white.
I also have a ghia, '63 model. I picked up an original colour chart a few years ago, I'll have a look and get back to you.

The factory colours brochure for the 1960 KG shows Paprika body and beige grey roof, but no paint code listed.
For 1961 and 1962 it has a similar colour roof, with paint code 566, probably Beige grey again.
For reference you will find the colour brochures on theSamba listed under Archives ->Literature -> All brochures for ghia.
Cheers, Pat.
thanks vwvariant, at least i know where to look, i have to ask the spraypainter if he understands that code to know the right color beige. regards greg

I've dug out the colour brochure. It is titled "Volkswagen 1200 Karmann Ghia", dated 1962/63 at the bottom. It actually doesn't list Paprika as
a colour, closest is Ruby Red. The brochure is the sort of thing the dealers would have had for customers. I bought it years ago from Europe from
memory.
Pearl White is NOT listed as the contrast colour of any main colour. There are two 'white' contrast colours, 580 and 581. By visual colour
comparison on the chart, 580 is similar to L87, and 581 is a white with a slight blue tone through it.
All available colours listed below, main body colour/contast roof colour. 582 is a black
Anthracite L469/580
Polar Blue L532/581
Terra Brown L571/580
Manila Yellow L560/582
Emerald Green L514/581
Pacific Blue L398/581
Ruby Red L456/582
Black L41/580
Sea Blue L360/581
Pearl White L87/582
There is no name actually given to the contrast colours unfortunately.
I'll be going through the same process with my car, I'm looking at the Emerald Green/581 combination - it was originally Pearl White all over.

thanks all for u imput, it seems the 62 before july was paprika and after was ruby red. i have to check mine but it must be prior to july.......... thanks again
Cars made in 62 after 31st July are 1963 model year, so no factory Paprika cars. Some brochures don't have paprika listed in 1962 either, but remember there were often different colours available between domestic and export markets.
Here is a post on the samba with some good references. The 580 roof colour on my brochure is pearl white L87, 581 is bluewhite L289 and 580 is black
L41.

L87 Pearl white
its painted now and that is the color, n it looks great.
post pics
Some pics would be great, need some inspiration! My '63 is booked in after Easter for a paint job - Emerald Green L514 main colour/Blue white L289
roof.
Looking to keep it standard except for BRMs (matte black repros), an NOS EMPI VDM steering wheel I picked up and possibly the VVDS disc brake
conversion - all bolt-on changes. Just got to get onto the interior details now.
