white walls
ceej - August 15th, 2010 at 08:33 PM

hey peeps this is my first post and im looking for some opinions on white wall tyres
now
ive got a 71 fasty that ive been restoring the last few months and now everything is done bar the tyres
i have a tub of white wall paint and im not sure how big i should do them
whether to have a skinny wall on the tyre on just paint the whole wall white
and the car is white aswell
do you think having the whole wall white will clash with the white of the car?

thats right go the pin stripe around 10 to 20 mil if you can get your hands onto a 70's sales brochure you will see the pin stripe how far off the rim is up to u or have a look at 1973 volkswagon type 3 wagon on youtube youll get yhe picture and for about 25 to 30 bucks a tyre u can get someone to do it for ya and it will be a good neat job
good luck

My red walls were done by redvan, and I think it was 1/4" stripe. I reckon they did a great job.

Just get flappers, easily removed if you change your mind, available in various sizes, and they look sweet!

Doctor - August 24th, 2010 at 11:36 PM

This flappers? how thin?

silverra23 - August 25th, 2010 at 08:38 AM

if you do a search on "atlas white wall" on ebay, there is a guy in greece who has all different variations of the flappers... red band with a small white ring on the outer edge.

my type 3 had a similar set on it when i first got them... most of the flapper was black, apart from a thin yellow ring on the outer edge. have also seen this style done with a red or white stripe.

squizy - August 25th, 2010 at 08:59 AM

You can get two tone flappers with a black band, then a white band giving the impression of a thin white.

Sumitomo do a got thin white tyre for $98 or thereabouts a corner. Rears in 15's will be fine, but not sure how narrow width they go do. Maybe get some Nangkangs for the front and then get a thin white cut and painted in.

empi - August 25th, 2010 at 10:56 PM

thin ones

telf - September 5th, 2010 at 08:55 PM

I got some flappers from the uk when i went to a show the other week. (VW Northwest). Fitted them last weekend, they look pretty good. Will post some pic in the next few days.

telf - September 6th, 2010 at 08:55 PM

Its a bit dark but you get the idea.

Wannavee - September 6th, 2010 at 09:57 PM

Here's mine.Theyre actually red and white flappers, never seen them before.Thats why I bought 'em.
Bought from a mate (Boris) on here that got them from ebay I think

nsuwift - September 6th, 2010 at 10:26 PM

Anyone used real white wall tyres before? Spoke to my tye guy and he said that he has had three different sets on his valiant and all went a yellowy colour. One set did it quite rapidly, hadn't even been used for driving on them the car was in storage?

Also with the inserts do you have any issues with them, ie. warping/buckeling etc.

Doctor - September 6th, 2010 at 10:30 PM

Any discoloration could be from Tyre shine, one of mine changed colour when tyre shine was put on it

Wannavee - September 6th, 2010 at 10:35 PM

A mate had issues with proper white wall tyres.
His mistake was using cleaning agents.Bleach works 'apparently' .

Flappers do buckle a bit, depends on the quality and size in my opinion

nsuwift - September 6th, 2010 at 10:45 PM

Cheers will talk to him and see what he says. I would rather go proper whitewalls if I can. If not is there any particular brand of flapper that you would suggest as being the best.

Wannavee - September 6th, 2010 at 11:12 PM

I really couldnt telya mate.Mine are Atlas brand, though I only drive my Ghia occasionally (not enough!).
The tyre shop that fitted them said they were the easiest and best fit they had seen before.Seem to be hanging on quite well.
Though again,I dont drive it everyday.
Ive seen some 3 inch flappers buckle real bad and look shit after a while.Think they were Atlas too from my hazy memory.
Go for proper whitewall tyres if you can afford them.
I would, and nearly did,but I cant justify spending $300 per tyre on something I hardly drive

silverra23 - September 7th, 2010 at 09:11 AM

Apparently the oils from the tyres leach through the whitewall and give it that yellow colour. Tyre black definitely effects them too.

redvan sell a white wall cleaner that gets rid of the yellowing.

Nikos - September 7th, 2010 at 10:24 AM

I use Jiffy and a firm brush to clean the white walls on my m/bike. Been using it for the past 11 years. A little goes a long way too.

Nick.

Wannavee - September 7th, 2010 at 05:11 PM

Cheers Nikos,I'll keep that in mind
