Picked up my car!! Very disappointed
naylor_james - September 7th, 2010 at 02:40 PM

Hey guys drove to Phillip island last night and back today to get my car ( the red squareback off eBay) .. The car runs ( very roughly) the interior is very poor ( rooflining has been handpainted white) and the paintjob Is appaling... I guess that what I get for buying a car without seeing it first... I'm pretty heartbroken... Although!!!! A suprise response from my gf put it all in perspective ... " I guess that gives you and excuse to strip it down and do it properly" not what I expected but I guess it's true... And that's where in up to now..

Not Good Mate....

My Son flew to Adelaide to see a beetle on Ebay....
and all the good bits were on another beetle...
wasted trip....
but didn't buy the beetle...
However He did buy another car off Ebay...
and it was Good...

You really need to ask heaps of questions and get heaps of photos before bidding on ebay....

You can ALso NOT pay for an item if its NOT as described....

it will cost You a lot of money to do up a type 3 compared to a beetle....

engine hopefully just needs a tuneup...
tuneups can do wonders toa beetle...

Maybe somebody on here can help You tune it up...

Yes glass side windows are easy to find...
also some models had push out side windows...
they may be harder to find ... but would be great...

You can get the rubbers OK, not sure who has them...

any pics Naylor?

I'll post pics when I get to the laptop

That's a shame mate.

On the rubbers, I ordered some from ispwest in the states. I'll have them on fir (in-law bringing them over). it would still have been about 100 cheaper even with shipping.

Did you actually buy it off fleabay or did you work out a deal after it finished as it didn't meet the reserve:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130417031981&ss...

Lesson learned not to trust anyone's description if you can't see it personally. Even some of our honest Veedubbers on here try to pass on some real crapp as a great deal as seen at the Nationals and Valla this year! It makes it a rather expensive toy when you buy it from an almost glowing description and it turns out it's a bit of a problem child.

Hope it turns out well in the end.

coming from Philip island...... be prepared to be shocked once you strip it down. Rusty as hell I suspect. Judging by the poor paint you mention any rust repair will be bog.

Fastie - September 7th, 2010 at 08:07 PM

Was going to say the same. Before you go too far with this. Pull back the carpets, and have a look at the floors - you might have to chip some tar away - but my bet is that is where rust is hiding. Battery box area.. and if you can remove fenders they love to hide there.

Good luck - and inspect it before stripping it unless you want to spend big $$$

naylor_james - September 7th, 2010 at 08:25 PM

thats the one posotive..i did look under the floors....no rust...didnt check battery tray.....sills...no rust there was a bit of rust on the drip rails near the hinges for the boot door...ive left the car at my parents for the week as dad has way more tools and garage space than me so i wont be ablke to get to it till next week...anyways thanks for your advice as always guys il keep you psoted

naylor_james - September 7th, 2010 at 08:29 PM

oh yeah and also does anyone have any info on a square in this months VWMA on pg24..Rebecca Roberts 13B turbo ...i would be interested on the size/width/offset and other gaurd/suspension mods she has made..those wheels arent exactly my taste but i would like to know the specs to get my wheels ordered as showwheels arent being much help :(

scot70wagon - September 7th, 2010 at 10:12 PM

check out members rides section under " bec' type 3 rotary"

Fastie - September 8th, 2010 at 02:31 PM

Under the floor it may be fine - but these cars rust from the inside out.. scary huh.. The heater tubes cause moisture to trap under the carpet and the floor starts to get thin - have a looksie there.

vlad01 - September 8th, 2010 at 07:46 PM

also depending on how much the heaters are used. If they are used a lot you should be rust free as they dry from the inside out but if they are not used much moisture sits there and causes rust.

Also the main cause of the inner guard to rust is driving through muddy puddles as dirt collects inside the the boxy reinforcements. More so on the passenger side as that is closest to the edge of the road. Same with the bumper mounts.

Dirt traps water ! Watch out for water leaking into the front trunk area , which gets into seams in the front apron and wheel well panel. most water in there comes from bad bonnet seal or already rusted out bumper mounts.

Rust in the A pillars just under the windows are usually caused by short winter trips where air is moist and trips are too short to warm the car completely. The air becomes warm enough to condense on cooler surfaces such as areas where the other side is exposed to the out side. Ie Window glass. The A pillar area is exposed to the oncoming cold air from the outside yet the lukewarm air causes condensation in this area inside just under the dash. that mosture sits there and akes a while to dry out. Long trips heat the car thoroughly and dry it out. Use the fog on the windshield as a guide to whether its dried out or not.

Hope that helps.
