MaD HoUsE - October 7th, 2010 at 11:06 PM

hi guys another question. this site proving more valuable then i thought. ok my problem, im making my T3 into a show car i want vw to be seen as cool and get the respect they deserve from the younger crowd. so i been spending heaps of dosh doing most of the work myself and have just put in a massive competition sound system with fold down tv n the lot but my alternator is to little and i cant power it all so what can i use that will fit my baby and power my battery?

As far as I know there are NO alternators to fit type 3 engines
only generators... which don't put out much current..
You may have to use two large batteries...??
which will still be hard for the generator to charge...

Alternators are larger than generators and were never designed to fit the type 3 engine.

If You have fitted a type 1 beetle engine then You can get an alternator for it... 51 or 75 amperes..
as they were fitted to late model beetles..

cheers

PS: its a type 3 .. a T3 is a Kombi as is a T25 etc...

You got any pix of you car.

I haven't confirmed it yet as I don't have alternator to play with yet. I hypothesis that you can use a type 1 alternator, mount a pulley on the other end (where the fan would be) and then mount it backwards in the type 3.

And I also recon if it can fit? to install an alternator fan pulley on the original pulley end. That will serve as the cooling for the alternator as there is no air port like the type 3 generator. it will pull air through the alternator
from belt housing out through the fan on what used to be the front of the alternator.

In case you are wondering, alternators work in both directions of rotation as they are a 3 phase alternating current generator, which is rectified via the diodes in the rectifier to provide DC.

Oh and an alt will be no good for a show car since it needs to be running to charge. You will need to install an inverter, and plug it in to run everything.

vlad01 - October 8th, 2010 at 07:48 AM

inverter? you mean the other way around.

But I think he wants it so it doesn't just die while using the car.

bajachris88 - October 8th, 2010 at 08:34 AM

One guy here, modded up an alternator to fit, was some custom work.... give him some time he might find this and reply

But don't loose hope. Just cause there was no factory option doesn't mean it can't be retrofitted :tu:

lol 40 amps.

you need ?? well depends on the sound system but most serious systems require anywhere up of 75 amp. I have seen some systems well over 250 amps

3 alternators just to run the car. Can't remember how many batteries :?:

zocstar - October 8th, 2010 at 11:06 AM

Sorry man, It was an example.

Heath, just ask this guy about everything. He knows it all

Joel - October 8th, 2010 at 12:15 PM

theres a few people around that have adapted modern car alternators to fit type3 pancake engines

Im pretty sure mickH or someone on here has pictures somewhere of how they did it

Edit* like so...

Not much room in a suitcase engine Chris...

if the cover wasn't over the engine, would be easy to add a couple of alternators, but when the whole lot fits in a suitcase..

not much room...

He could always use a type 1 engine accessories and use a beetle 51 or 75 amp alternator...
or maybe two....

I think subarus have the alternator on top ??

Don't worry, they say that size doesn't matter.

Joel - October 8th, 2010 at 05:00 PM

I thought that too Matt, but then I realised its in the type3 section not watercooled ??

that's an excellent article....

anyone with a type 3 can upgrade to an alternator...

they are dirt cheap at wrecking yards...
