Colour codes for Australian Type Threes
jedt3 - October 22nd, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Hi Guys,

I am looking for colour charts for Australian Type Threes from 1970 until close of production. I have seen charts on places like The Samba, but they don't appear to refer to Australia. Does anyone have this info, or is it on the site and I have not found it?

Thanks,

Jed

Here you go.

Problem with that is there are not many examples of the color.

I still can't work out what color mine is?

Burrelli - October 22nd, 2010 at 02:49 PM

Yes examples of the colours would be great. I noticed the colour of the notch on your signature looks like plum? or maybe its called Plum Crazy? It is not on that chart. I think that colour was avilable around 71. Maybe the cars with that colour were fully imported????

jedt3 - October 25th, 2010 at 11:13 AM

Hi,

Well firstly my 1970 Fastback I had always thought was Sahara Beige. I want to confirm before I repaint it. I was also looking to the bright turquose blue and the purple like Vlad's car.

Regards,

Jed

Royal Glow

vlad01 - November 24th, 2010 at 07:44 PM

can you prove it? I got just as many people telling me its "plum loco" and it is a plum purple....so?

farkengruven - November 24th, 2010 at 09:14 PM

Plum Loco is not a VW colour. It is a Leyland P76 colour, and it is not listed on any VW charts.
Royal Glow is listed on 1971 Australian VW charts.

vlad01 - November 25th, 2010 at 11:00 AM

Went to perrows paint and gave them the two name and also brought in my numberplate light for a example.

yep royal glow is in the old vw catalog they have there. but its much darker in the book? And no my paint has not faded as its the same color everywhere
throughout all places in the car. The color in the book was like de oxygenated blood rather than purple.

farkengruven - November 25th, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Is the VW catalog they have printed, or is the colour a real paint swatch?
Do they have the formula? Yes, then get them to mix a small batch and see how it compares to your car.

vlad01 - November 25th, 2010 at 06:53 PM

its printed and yes they do have to formula. Actually I think it was an old paint catalog which has a vw section.

good idea :) I will ask for a sample next time.

vlad01,
Found this old Volkswagen Type 3 Color Chart for 1969.
Color : Royal Red, L30A Rouge Royal, looks to red for your color...VW Code 17, 1969 - '70

The VW color of your car is called Colorado Metallic L97D, VW Code 81, 1970 - '72

1973 the color was changed to a lighter color called Pop Lilac.

All this info. came from the Ditzler PPG Volkswagen Paint Color Charts.

Must have been a Rare available color, haven't seen it on another Type 3.

farkengruven - December 3rd, 2010 at 01:51 PM

Royal glow was an Australian only color. US color charts will not help

L469 - December 3rd, 2010 at 07:07 PM

hi vlad is the paint code and name sticker missing on your car on the spare wheel carrier panel in your boot im a painter of 22 years have painted this colour royal glow also viewed this car and a fasty same year in last couple of years both in nsw certain 100% its royal glow

L469 - December 3rd, 2010 at 07:27 PM

any chance you could look in the boot?

vlad01 - December 3rd, 2010 at 09:25 PM

nah the sticker is missing, that why I have been asking everyone else.

yes it certainly is royal glow.

58camper - December 8th, 2010 at 12:25 PM

You are right it is - ROYAL GLOW.
It is listed as a 1971 VW colour Shade # 13244 in a 1980 Dulux Car Colour Directory.
Any good painter should be able to make up the correct colour based on the above shade #

I also saw a paint chip for Royal Glow to confirm the same information

The same Shade number ( 13244) is also listed in the 1973 Datsun colour range in the same,

Back in early days there was a group of paints called "Ford Fleet" and Royal Glow was also used there but I dont have the Form Fleet colour code.

Hi Vlad,

What colour is your fender beading?

Regards,

Jed
1970 Fastback

vlad01 - January 20th, 2011 at 09:37 PM

black like all the type 3's I have owned.

why you ask?

jedt3 - January 21st, 2011 at 11:23 AM

Hi Vlad,

My 1970 Fastback, which I think is Sahara Beige, had matching beading. I still have it, but it is old and faded. I am going to try to refurbish it (the beading). I was curious to see if you car had matching beading, as that would look pretty cool.

Regards,

Jed

vlad01 - January 21st, 2011 at 06:22 PM

My car has a purple and black scheme.

Black interior (apart from the head lining) black front boot lining and black beading.

the rear boot is beige though, i think its coz they never made black rear boot linings? I could be wrong though.
