Brakes squealing!
Petey - November 1st, 2010 at 01:25 PM

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, I have a squareback and the brakes seem to work fine but they have been getting louder and louder and I really have to stop them squealing. I can see people wincing as i pull up :)
Would it be a simple thing to fix? I was thinking of just taking it down to a brake place but would they have trouble being that it's an old vw or would it be fine?

Thanks
Pete

We talking stock drum or discs?

crazy squealing for discs is usually a sign that the pads are worn out.

Sorry, i forgot to mention, they are disc brakes, it's a 72 model.
I looked at them recently and they didn't seem that bad.

You can get this brake squeal stuff from Supercheap. It works pretty well. Just apply it to the pad backs. I have used the copper spray gasket stuff on them as well with good results.

Cool, I'll give that a go.

its usually just a stone causing the noise...
gets amplified thru the hub etc...

My squareback back in the 70s used to do that...
I just told myself its letting Me know the brakes are working
OK...

LOL

yOU COULD JUST TAKE THE PADS OFF.... VERY EASY
AND WIREBRUSH THEM...

dust build up or a stone as mentioned,
pull out pads n grab some sandpaper or alike n give em a good seeing too as well as the rotors
put em back together n bye bye squeal
remember to wear a mask n safety glasses
brake dust is bad for your lungs
cheers h
