air engine rubber ( Breather)
petitesouris - November 10th, 2010 at 08:49 AM

Hey does anyone know where i can quickly find that piece of rubber in oz or maybe the cheapest location to get it...Thanks!

at the moment i am running the car without but did read it is not good for my engine...and i love my engine!!

waveman1500 - November 10th, 2010 at 09:13 AM

Which part do you mean? Do you just mean the breather hose? Because that is basically just a short piece of large-diameter fuel hose, about 3/8" I think.

petitesouris - November 10th, 2010 at 10:18 AM

Yes i think that is the one...large piece of rubber that connect the breather to another part...excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge...trying to learn!

PurpleT3 - November 10th, 2010 at 11:19 AM

What type of car do you have?
Your profile pic is of a type 3 dash. If you have a type 3 and are talking about the rubber bellows which connects the the engine to the air intake at the back - DO NOT drive the car without this. You will very quickly overheat the engine.

petitesouris - November 10th, 2010 at 12:19 PM

Yes I have a fastback T3 1970 TL and i have been driving the car without since got it back from the guy who did fix the engine but we could not replace that part HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP what can i use at the moment it is my daily drive so no choice really..

petitesouris - November 10th, 2010 at 12:22 PM

I do 30 km in the morning and 30 km in the evening...no more but on my way back it is really hilly and i could sometimes smell a bit of overheating i bloody need to find that part very quickly i guess! I have the manual somwhere will take the car this aftarnoon to supercheap auto maybe they can help for the time being! thanks for the advice

bajachris88 - November 10th, 2010 at 12:24 PM

if u need a hose mate, just race off to any autobarn or repro and tell them how long u need, and what diameter. Anything is better than overheating, until u get whatever is meant to properly sit there :tu:

even garden hose is better tahn cooking a boxer:dork:

If its th main engine rubber the large one i got a new from classic vee dub in sydney....its a brasil made one noe quite as good as the german original in quality but will do the job it was around $40 if i remember right

chris7 - November 10th, 2010 at 01:34 PM

sorry wrong one lool you mean the small breather...like above just find the same size hose and cut to length...should be a nice easy job

petitesouris - November 10th, 2010 at 01:36 PM

loooooool ion my engine ....

on the right...there is two black sort of obx that should be connected with a rubber...that is quiet large I mean it was...lol I am terrible with mechanic!!

petitesouris - November 10th, 2010 at 01:38 PM

chris7 - November 10th, 2010 at 04:45 PM

lool yeh good you tell him!!...i have a 72 fasty too but its not on the road yet(wish it was) iam stripping down to restor it....wish i new how to post some pics ....getting the right hose shouldnt be difficult even if you have to take there and show them!!

waveman1500 - November 10th, 2010 at 09:59 PM

Could we please have a photo so that we can be sure of which bit you are actually missing? If it's the big oval rubber bellows part which attaches to the fan intake, then you will need to go to a VW parts specialist to get another one, and do so ASAP.

petitesouris - November 11th, 2010 at 08:48 AM

ok went to supercheap auto and like the guy who did fix my VW he said i could drive without that piece of rubber as air is coming but not as cold as it should be if it was coming at the back of the car this is the black piece of metal roundish at the back of front of the engine near the indicator...anyway as soon as I can post picture i will and also will order the new one i have the manual so should be able to look for that part easily. Thanks all for your reponses!!

PurpleT3 - November 11th, 2010 at 11:16 AM

https://shop.westcoastmetric.com/viewProduct.php?productID=311-665B

Is this the part?

If it is what is missing, you will bugger your engine very quickly driving without it.

Remember with type 3s the hot air from the engine is discharged right next to the intake. With out the bellows the fan is sucking the hot air straight back in again. Trying to cool the engine with hot air does not work very well.

Do not listen to people from Supercheap, Autobarn etc. Generally they know nothing about air cooled VW's.

Have a look at the AVD sponsors. Any of them should be able to supply this part. You could try:
Classic VM
Vintage VW
Mick Motors
or you could get it direct from Westcoat Metric, depending on shipping time.

petitesouris - November 11th, 2010 at 02:28 PM

Yes it is the part....The thing is the guy that did some work on my engine he is good said it was ok but you are right and I will order that part very soon anyway but as he said will not blwo up the engine i guess but the weather is getting warmer and warmer so will order this week thank you so much!!!

robb - November 11th, 2010 at 06:53 PM

now that was like pulling teeth plus dont forget to buy the straps for it when you locate one [bellows]

petitesouris - November 23rd, 2010 at 03:17 PM

he I kept the strap...preciously...now did order one from the state waiting on their reply...as the one from oz was very expensive so i guess even with the postage it will be still cheaper...

Joel - November 23rd, 2010 at 06:14 PM

Everyone is quick to jump in and say fan intake rubber bellows.....

Sounds more to me like the rubber joiner on the air cleaner intake

Is this the hose?
If it is, it's not doing the enigne any favours without it but its not going to overheat or anything like that and will still drive fine daily, but needs to be replaced soon

I thought so.

Sadly no that link was not the right part, people misunderstood which part it was.

Looks like none of the big websites like CIP1, WCM etc list the air cleaner hose, probably why it was homemade to start with.

You could try Lismore service center, he can probably get it but it will take him awhile to order it in, better off giving Mick motors in bris a call

petitesouris - November 29th, 2010 at 10:39 AM

pffffffffffffffff I am so upset...I paid lol 75$ for that parts because they did not contact me I asked them to let me know how much it will be...before sending it to me...no reply at all so i'll have to learn...by my mistake. we tried Lismore service centre. The original part i had was sort not the original.

I think that's it not ordering anything online unless i am sure about it my hubby is going to be laughing at me!!! but I am not that happy about my mistake...I tried Mick but he was busy and did not return my call as I urgtently need an engine mounting...same thing i hope they do understand what I mean...Thanks a lot for all your help joel you are gold to me!!!
