Hi fellow dubbers,
Type 3 owner here coming out of lurkdom to show off my fastback project. I got myself a good example of a '70 type 3 and with a bit of work, some
rust repairs and a couple of donor bits i've almost finnished her (it's taken since last November!)
Originally Antarctica White, I've chosen Anthrazit for the finish (a 1960 German VW colour. L469 is the paint code LOL )
I've done most of the work myself, weekends, spare time after work (learning every step of the way. I'm a tradesman painter, the rest is all new to
me )
I'd like to share some more pics and I will when I find them LOL. For now here's before, in the spray booth and after assembly (well... exterior
assembly, the interior still needs an interior LOL Isn't it alway the way. I'm on a tight budget )
I was lucky to nab the car out of Waverly for $900! almost 3 months out of rego so I had to get it rego'ed quickly first and get it quickly done.
Thankfully that didn't mean taking short cuts! Just put in some long hours.
Looking forward to the day (soon!) when I can refit the interior and have the kids and Mrs go for a cruise
I figured there's a few nice white fastback around already. This colour was originally only available on notches and squarebacks (and beetles, kombis
and Karmanns) built from 1960 - 1963. It was never available on a fastback.
good work mate, love to see pics of cars that the "owners" have done majority of the work on
good stuff
matt
fuchin ace man
couple more pics stripping down and cutting out rust
extent of rust starting to become clear
my wife is teaching to cut paste pics this pic shows same area before outer panel mud trap box section was cut out
this same area cleaned 1st of 3 new sections going back on got to play with a spot welder just bugged the nearest panel beater to show me how to
operate
fuch that thats why I just went and bought all NOS inner guards.
do hope you realise the amount of work involved in fitting your new old stock guard time equals $ effort and expence
could outweigh the benefit lots of extra cutting and welding
the areas repaired on my car did away with the rust trap box sections and kept the amount of cutting and welding too the toubled areas that you would
just be swapping like for like
yes work, money not so much if you know how to do it.
plus I have guard and front apron holes in my rust I don't have any
choice.
is your car stripped down? love too see some pics
no not atm. collecting all the parts first. and I got other things that need to be done before I can even start.
Ie. concrete the shed, buy tools and equipment blah blah.
have you any pics of your rusty bits ? on the car that is
can have some pic when it light again
cool look forward to seeing what you have on your car rust or rust with car on it do you ever go on the samba forums to check out the american cars vw type 3s that is
Yes i have started going on the samba in the last few weeks. lol what the guys do there, made my car look like its rust free
my car has rust in the inner guards in the same spot as yours and all the seams are rusted through in the very front. so thats the bumper mounts,
apron and spare wheel carrier panel. all stuffed and not worth fixing.
I did buy a donor body before I bought the NOS sheet metal/panels and I dismantled the front clip into its components. The donor was much less rusted
but i found it wasn't worth using it either and only once I dismantled it I found that out.
I got some bits out of it and sold the rest and still have the front clip part as practice. The type 3 is rather easy to replace whole panels like
this.
So its not like I am going into this blind. I know the body inside out end to end now and know exactly how to tackle it and most important how to make
it better.
your sill is alot worse than mine but the rest looks pretty good do you have rust in the firewall leaf mulcher section?
yes but very little. few micro pin holes. also the rear wheel arch between the arch and the boot. this is unique to the notch back due to a different
boot area design allowing water to trap between the 2 sheets of metal. Got repair section for them.
the last place I got rust is the the cavity between the heater channel vent and front reinforcement "s" piece.
these are the pics of those spots. oh and they is a few tiny pin holes in the LHS door and one small in the left c pillar. usual quarter panel rust
too but I am not even worry about the panels atm
its really weird as my right sill is perfect so is the door? I bought right NOS sill just in case. Floor pan is great except when the previous owned
spilled the battery and ate everything in the vicinity, even the carpet. Shame coz the carpet was otherwise in tip top for its age.
Anyway the right pan section need replacing as its damaged. left side still shiny
Love the colour choice on the fasty - looks ace and acredit to the work...!
have a soft spot for ya pink thing Vlad - was trying to convince the missus when it was on the market... but we're apparently down sizing not up
sizing...
I shoulda cut the sills outta that fasty I just pulled apart for ya - they were mint....!
hi type3disease if i won lotto i would be buying that notch you have for sale atm fingers crossed
I don't need door sills mate I already got NOS sills. I got 90% of the panels in NOS ready to go for it. only problem is I need a job
well I got the dream car that I always wanted since I was 14, now just need money to make it happen.
found another pic masked off for main shell to be primed up you can also see my van in background 89 t3 or t25
anyone notice the box section mount i made for the fuel filler on inner guard? it was seam welded with 2 holes drilled inside the boot and pumped with
rust proofing wax
