1969 Fastback what's it worth?
jeffrerr - January 24th, 2011 at 06:25 PM

Hi guys, I'm a newbie and rudely I haven't been to the newbie section as yet, time is a littel limited with a 6 month old bub in the house!

Which brings me to my question: I've sadly had to buy a bigger 2nd car (of all things an AU Falcon Wagon) and will have to part with my beloved Fasty. It's a 1969 Fasty with everything original other than the bonnet and bumpers, a CD player and some speakers (no big holes cut for speakers, they're box mounted to the parcel shelf). It's been sprayed (roughly) about 3 years ago and could probably do with a refresh by someone with more time and money than myself. My question is what are these things worth? I've not yet seen a pre 1970 for sale anywhere and have nothing to go on for pricing! It's been my daily driver to get to and from work for 2 years and runs beautifully! Any opinions on what I should be asking for it would be greatly appreciated!

My honest opinion is to keep it and store it but the boss doesn't agree as I'm also restoring a 1967 VC Chrysler Valiant that's been in my family for over 20 years!

Throw up some pics for us? It will help.
Where abouts are you at.

jeffrerr - January 24th, 2011 at 07:39 PM

Sorry Zocstar, I did do a reply saying I'd add some pics ASAP but had log in issues! Will get on to new ones ASAP but will throw some up from a couple of years ago tonight!

jeffrerr - January 24th, 2011 at 07:57 PM

These pics are as of January 2009, nothing has changed other than I couldn't track down chrome caps to fit so threw a set of Bug rims and caps on it!

jeffrerr - January 24th, 2011 at 07:58 PM

Oh and I'm in Hobart!

type3disease - January 24th, 2011 at 08:07 PM

nice looking car Jeff - wish these were around when I lived in Hobart - only saw one notch for sale when I was first looking (now live in VIC)

mate your car with running, complete and with Reg? has to be worth 3-6k somewhere - that may sound a bit vague - but really hard to tell without actually seeing or driving it in person...

if you advertise it start high and work down from there - keep in mind what it owes you and how soon you need it sold...

I'm not a massive Fasty fan... but looking at those pics... I'd own it...! looks like a good basis for a very cool type 3...! and being a 5 stud makes it that bit cooler...! (btw I reckon its probably actually a 65-67 not a 69)

good luck with it all (i have an 8month old and know what ya feeling!)

cheers Ben

jeffrerr - January 24th, 2011 at 08:13 PM

Thanks Ben! It doesn't owe me much, but I don't want to give it away, hence why I'm asking people who know! If my wife had her way it would be on ebay for $1000 buy it now, but when the local VW guy that does some of my mechanical work says "it must be worth a bit?" my ears pricked up so thought I should ask around!

jeffrerr - January 24th, 2011 at 08:21 PM

The history of the car is it was given to my father by the original owner in 2005, dad saw it in a garage in Sandy Bay whilst doing some landscaping across the street! Old bloke said he drove it into the shed on night and it wouldn't start the next day so he bought a Hyundai Excell and left the Fasty to sit for 8 years! Told dad get a trailer and you can have it! Dad was going to turn it into a buch basher so I saved it, owed him $120 and it cost $30 for trailer hire so I sort of paid $150 for it! It wouldn't start 'cause the coil was stuffed! lol Had a few dents in the left front guard and bonnet so I sourced a bonnet and repaied the guard as best as possible and the father in law shot a coat fo paint over her! Got her passed for rego in January 2009 and driven nearly every work day since! Has had new tie rods ends, ball joints and steering damper done recently, new brakes in 09, clock says just over 40k miles but not sure if it's first time around, the way the engince runs I'm assuming it's the first time round! Was originally to replace the wifes desire for a Beetle, but then she hated driving it and I loved driving it so I inherited it! But now life demands it goes! :(

zocstar - January 24th, 2011 at 10:00 PM

Looks nice. What's with good ones turning up in tassie? Might make it a bit harder to sell?
And it looks a bit early than 69?
Good luck.

Burrelli - January 24th, 2011 at 10:25 PM

I recon its a 68 it should be 12v and the 3rd digit in the chassis number should be an 8 meaning 1968.

jeffrerr - January 25th, 2011 at 07:20 AM

I think it's a first registered 69 so that's just what it says on the rego papers! Could be a 68!

type3disease - January 25th, 2011 at 10:29 AM

think a 68 would have black dash knobs not the chrome sliders...!

hey Jeff - whats your wifes number? might make her an offer...! lol
good excuse for me and the missus and bub to come for a holiday and i could drive it home...!

Burrelli - January 25th, 2011 at 08:12 PM

Looks like 12v black knobs on the dash it also has thin side trim that 68s had.

Good luck with the sale looks like a good car in the photos.

jeffrerr - January 25th, 2011 at 08:49 PM

Sorry Ben, I've worded her up on the possible value now!

Will have better pics and possibly an ad drafted up on the weekend! If anyone knows of someone interested we are happy to deliver to Melbourne if buyer pays the cars boat fare (

type3disease - January 25th, 2011 at 09:22 PM

early door handles and locks, Z arms rests, 5 stud wheels, up and down slider for dash vents and a cigarette lighter... as opposed to black dash vent knobs

I wonder if the chrome body trim hasn't been changed at the time of the paint job...! not 100% sure with fasty's but I'm still pretty sure it aint no 68' (iunless its a aussie/german difference..?)
all jokes aside who knows how long before they were shipped to Tassie, and how long it sat at the showroom/dealership before it sold... could be a 67 registered 69
(not to mention the stickers are rarely that accurate...)

back of the speedo if its original, og spare wheel or the i.d. plate will tell us for sure... unless its a friday arvo clayton special...!?!?

will happily help spread the word Jeff, like it... but not in the market for a fasty too much else on my plate...!:D

empi - January 26th, 2011 at 07:43 AM

Looks like a 67 and a half clayton special, 3rd digit in chassis number/ tin compliance plate will sort that out, tell tail signs of being a 67.5 is black light switches (earlier are ivory), black hand brake grip (Earlier are grey) 69 would be IRS, different fresh air dash knobs, 4 stud disc and drum and a fuel flap on the D/S front guard, trigger style door handles etc etc...

Good luck with the sale looks like a nice car.

rebel - January 27th, 2011 at 07:33 PM

looks like a 68 no fuel flap chrome sliders wide 5
12 volt a 69 would have black vent knobs but could also have early door handles z arm rests and would definetly be irs good luck with the sale

passatbird - January 28th, 2011 at 07:13 PM

tony from adelaide here...Iam in the market for a pre69 fasty, and can tell you what 2 are up for sale here in Adelaide atm,,,, the first is a 1966 pretty tidy and not much work required he originally had price at $6.5k however has reduced asking price to $5.8k,,,as i said very tidy,,has been lowered and has empi mags and has britex ragtop roof (sunroof), and mechanicly pretty spot on,,,the other one is a 67 or 68 pretty originakl fasty,,,the guy wants 1200 to 1500,,,needs heaps of work with major rust repairs...overall paint not too bad,,but when the rust is all fixed up most likely will need a complete respray,,,body besides rust issue is pretty straight and good,,,engine may need a bit of work as well...so they are two examples at the two extremes i suppose.....the other one iam aware of is a1969 automatic fastie in northerrn NSW,,,,thgat guy is currently restoring, and he has told me he is after $5k when work is finished.....as i said iam after a fasty...however my price range is no higher than $3.5....so let me know if that fits in with your price range..cheers,,tony from adelaide...you can contact me on 0431945116...or 08) 83586807..or email...kerrieone64@yahoo.com.au....cheers

Finally checked the plates, it's a 68!

zocstar - February 7th, 2011 at 05:20 AM

Have you worked out how many $$$ you want yet.

jeffrerr - February 8th, 2011 at 11:49 AM

Looked back through a few Just Cars and that type of "Magazine" to see what people were asking for them over the last couple of years and called a few sellers to see what they got for theirs if they sold at all and from what I can gather from that and what people have said on here I'll be asking $5,500 o.n.o.! Waiting for days off work that have decent weather to get fresh pics!

jeffrerr - February 8th, 2011 at 11:55 AM

Oh also I'm in no rush to off load as I don't have the replacement daily fixed and rego'd yet!

rebel - February 8th, 2011 at 07:21 PM

those cars are probably registered theres nearly a grand just food for thought,a lot of people are put off unregistered

jeffrerr - February 9th, 2011 at 03:35 PM

Um... it is registered!
