Hi All,
this is my first post so you will have to excuse me if I'm asking a dumb question.
I need a flywheel for an early model type 3. It is a 1500 and was a 6volt and has been converted to 12volt. Apparently a problem with doing this is
that the 6volt starter motor wears away the teeth on the flywheel (according to the mechanic), to the point where the starter motor doesn't engage
and the motor won't start.
Anyway I need to get a new flywheel. Apparently there are different sizes and diameters and numbers of teeth on flywheels for type 3s. The mechanic is
very reluctant to pull the motor out to check all these out so that I know exactly what to get. Can I tell what sort of flywheel I need from the
engine number? Apparently it has a large size clutch fitted not one of the small ones(according to the mechanic). The engine number starts with K00
45---.
Is it possible to get the teeth re-machined?
Alternatively, would it be difficult to change over to a 12volt starter motor and flywheel, or is a 12 volt flywheel a larger size meaning the
bellhousing would need modification?
I would be grateful for any info.

Just leave the 6 volt starter and flywheel and run them on 12 volt.
The starter motor spins the engine over a bit quicker, and as long as your engine is in good condition and well tuned it will start immediately.
The only time you will have a problem is if you spend ages cranking the engine over ie if you run out of fuel!
If you do want to go down the track of fitting a 12 volt flywheel, the flywheel will need to be modified to suit the 6 volt crankshaft, the gearbox
will need to be clearanced (12 volt is slightly larger) and a conversion bush fitted to the gearbox to fit the 12 volt starter spiggot.
Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave,
I have just found a thread in the 'Tech Talk' section of the forum where someone else has got a similar problem to mine. I'm pretty sure I need a
200mm diam 6 volt flywheel, which apparently is hard to get hold of.
If I can't get a 6 volt flywheel for a relatively easy fix, I will have to bite the bullet and convert to a 12 volt flywheel.
So if anybody out there wants to sell a 200mm diam flywheel for a 6 volt 1500 Type 3, in reasonable condition, give me a call. 0427 549 202.
Thanks, Darren.
