type 3 fan housing block off ideas?
type3lover - February 2nd, 2011 at 08:42 PM

What is a good way to block off the outlets on either side of the fan housing on a type 3 motor?
Aerosol can lids is all I have used in the past.
I had mine gaffer taped on and they lasted 200 miles.
The glue on the tape dried out and they just blew off.
I've used hose clamps to hold em on in the past but looking for a tidy option.
Big welsch plugs maybe? Ideas please!

I have seen on the Samba site that someone had used a neat plastic plug that had an expanding ring on it so it was just pushed in and the centre bolt/nut was done up to expand the plug.

I did a search but could'nt find the thread.

Of course coke cans work well too but these pugs were very clean. Maybe they were a plumbing thing?

if your going to block of the cooling outlets to the heater box

you had better install either J pipes to number 1 n 3 or remove the outer shielding on the heater boxes and wire open the flap valve at the front to allow air flow to remove the heat

other wise it will transfere direct to your heads and cause engine over heating

I had / did this about 30 years ago on my Type 3

Thanks for the replies so far...seems there are many ways to tackle this.

Interesting point vw54...some J pipes in 1 3/8 would be handy.

Do you happen to know if I need to get Type 3 specific ones or will beetle ones be ok? I have an aftermarket exhaust on there, but have the heater boxes still in place.

Head temps so far have been around 225 running in the new motor...with the sender under #3 plug. But this is more of an overall guide and probably not very accurate.

Oil temps stabilised at 100 on a hot day...when the spray can lids blew off it climbed to 125 but luckily i was almost home.

No the J pipes are not specific

yep see the temp rise it just FEW kLMS

wHY DO U WANT OR NEED TO REMOVE THE PIPES ????

get some tube and flex pipe and fit them up much better for cooling the entire engine
