Hi,
I'm new to the site but not to Type 3s, bought my first over 20 yrs ago and currently have a 71 auto. I'm in uk where I have lived all my life but
have recently (2009) bought an AU car which I believe was exported in 2006. I bought the car after it had sat 3 year or so in a garage over here. Alas
all the paperwork fro the car had gone astray so did all the required to correctly import into the UK. This is the car as it was the day it arrived,
anyone recognize it? Owned it? know any history?
According to the birth certificate the car was exported as a CKD in 71 and the colour shown was white. The car has been blown over at some point so
has this red colour, over orange over white. It is suggested that the white is perhaps a white primer VW used and was the colour it was shipped in. Is
this the case or was the car perhaps exported i whit then painted by VW AU before registration to first customer?
Anyway, here is a picture of the car now....
Si
I'm bumping this as had a bunch of people read it but no one replied
I was wondering if our ozzie friends didn't like us?
Someone must know something about what the form was was cars were imported as Complete Know Downs in 71?
Help me out dudes
is that been sprayed or original colour?
same colour as the family ford cortina we had when I was like 5. Was just as shinny as that to.
You may get a few whiney people moaing about cars going to the UK from here but luckily not many of them and a car is a car and money talks.
They certainly get alot more impressive bodywork done on them in the UK than here.
That's the reason I love VZi so much.
All my 70s bugs with original paint have had white undercoating.
Phil74camper will be able to fill you in on the details of type3 builds but pretty much eveything here from 68-76 were CKD kits. The semi auto beetles
were fully imported, no idea bout type3 autos though.
You should be able to find traces of the original colour around the place like back of the dash board, under the backseat etc
Has it still got an original Dulux paint sticker under the hood like this?
Hey Joel, Cheers for your reply...I was about to pull the plug.
All the inner parts of the car seem like an orangey colour which is what I couldn't understand about the white, I've since discovered the VW used a
white primer, this is prob the white under your bugs and under my fasty.
Didn't know that about the semi auto bugs...perhaps the chap you recommended can help with this...
I'm 99% certain the original Dulon sticker is under the hood, at some point the car has been blown over in another colour and as UK cars don't have
this sticker I figured it was the paint sticker from the 'blow over' paint job. So i'm proper chuffed as I may well now know the original paint
colour I will check ad post once i've looked.
I've come across an original Australian VW radio which I will be fitting up as want to keep the cars Australian heritage intact.
I will get a message off to phil74camper as sounds like a fella I need to talk to.
Cheers again Dude

ok so the Dulon/Dulux label under the bonnet says Radar Red....so now i'm more confused!
looks like radar red it is! same as mine except mine had been in the queensland sun for 37 years.
yellow and white showing through the faded paint. nice choice of wheels. any more pics
got lots of pics, posted some here http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=89523&page=1#pid833059
Is radar red called another name in europe or was it a VW Au paint colour only do you know?
Is Radar red paint still available?
you got anymore pics of yours?
Cheers for the comments about the wheels, I think they look great on a type 3, but I've sold them...took them off the car today, packaging them up
tomorrow.
Sat it back on steels today until i've got around to polishing and detailing the new rims.....
radar red an aussie only colour also used on datsuns of same era
My bug was originally a British car so it's a fair swap :-)
its an orangey red.
I class that as an orange.
yep, In some lights its looks red and in others orange.
Is this paint still available does anyone know?
its very difficult to convert to todays paint an australian paint code from such a limited run of colours for what seems like 2 or 3 years of ckd
production
its like finding a needle in a hey stack because the factory code is paint brand specific and they were kept on micro film things have gone onto
computer
most have been lost getting the closest eye match is probably your best bet
I am sure you can still get it. After all mine was, I saw it myself too, in the paint catalog at Perrows.
Cheers guys, At least I've tracked it down to the original colour! Planning to body off in the next couple of years and would love to return it to
the original colour, keep it's AU heritage. Guess i'll cross that bridge when I get to it, would be good to buy the paint now though and squirrel it
away for when the time comes.
Googled perrows but can't see a catalogue, will drop them a mail.
Cheers again for your help dudes
Si
Perrows is a local Bendigo store only. But dam they are good. They are run by old experienced panel beaters and painters.
They been around for like 30 years?

Yeah I know about the cabs, and have seen them personally up close when I was on a job up in Syd.
Looked just about right I recon.
I haven't got a sample made up yet but I will ask next time I go to Bendigo "aka the white hole"
