1600 FI engine conversion?
patrickgc - July 6th, 2011 at 10:20 PM
Hello everyone,
I am considering to put a subaru engine into my Type 3 or to rework the current engine. Frankly I would much rather keep the current engine as I kind
of feel it belong into my girl. On the other hand a bit more power, AC and reliability would be nice too so the idea was born to perhaps rework the
current engine to increase the size to say 1700 or 1800 ccm, include fuel injection and hook up an AC. Now I have done the first in Germany with a
different engine but has anyone done that to a Type 3 engine???
Cheers,
Patrick

I would have to recomend Custom Bugs and Busses. Mike has now been looking after my Bug for about 8 years and I have EFI set up which he has tuned and
rectified through out a few different enging combos including turbo charging and has given me more than excellant results. I am now with Mikes help
building a new engine with a Haltec computor which he will again do all the tunning and set up.
I will never go back to carbs after EFI, the tunability find more power than carbs will ever get, as well as smoother exceloration and fuel
economy.
To add, Mike has inhouse Dyno which allows him to personaly turn and get the most out of your engine as well as make any other recomendations that
would improve the situation, he's also an excellent engine builder, for example my 2165cc turbo charged engine made just over 200hp ant the wheels on
98 pump fuel.
As far a AC most people would avoid trying such a thing, as far as I know if anyone can do it, Mike can. Give him a call on (02) 47229313 and have a
chat.

No body ever does, EFI just makes life too easy.
For me at the moment I'm just loving these 4c mornings I can just start and drive straight off.
Such fond memories of having to warm up my Weber fed engine and still having to baby it for the first 5 mins.

I think you'll find it's on most peoples wish list.
More and more VWs are being fitted it these days.
Type3s are easy, plenty of room and nearly all of them in the US were sold new with A/C, not that the old stuff is any good.

type 3's had the option of fuel injection from the factory i have a complete
rolling chassis i bought saving it from sims i just hook up a battery poor some fuel in it
and away she goes smooth as. never taken it for a spin . air con was an option on american cars
but comes at a cost to power if you want air con buy a golf . as for reliability that is up to you
service the car properly and you will experience what these cars built their entire reputation on
dependable reliable daily transportation .my family has been involved with vw's for more than 50 years 3 generations
and human era has been to blame for most mishaps in that time .changing the basic principal of the air cooled vw
with non genuine water cooled troublesome complicated jap engines is hardly a long term fix .
just what do you want from the car ?
vlad01 - July 7th, 2011 at 08:00 PM
yep EFI is the best. I once had a 72 TLE fasty and my god did that thing go!
Mighty surprising how much better and how much more torque it had over the carby counterpart.
Joel - July 7th, 2011 at 08:24 PM
If your handy a nice easy and relatively cheap option would be a stock D-jet setup from a TLE and mega squirt it.
vlad01 - July 7th, 2011 at 11:14 PM
yep i have seen it done before with great success.

I want to be able to drive it quite often (incl in Summer). I do like the idea of keepint the VW engine but a bit more power, economy and AC would be
nice. I have a newer VW but I just like to drive the Type 3 more often.

keep your eye on ebay and here for beat up rusty TLE fastbacks being wrecked or going cheap.
Sadly they didn't sell in big numbers in Aus and clueless backyard mechanics have ripped alot of them out over the years and put carbs on simply cos
they didn't know how to work on/fix the D-jet system.
It's a good system when it works, theres a factory D-jet import beetle around here and it runs and drives like a swiss watch compared to a carbed
bug.
Todays scroll and rotary compressors run pretty well on a VW engine and don't load them up that badly.

I've set up a type 3 using stock type 3 efi hardware and installed a Haltech programmable system. A few holes need to be drilled for sensors and
wiring, all the stock bits can usually be scrounged, so it works out to be a very easy install.

When it comes to aftermarket stuff like fuel injection most of them on the samba don't know their arse from the ground.
Try the actual Fuel injection forum on shoptalk, alot more know how there.

The stock setup is a good system but it;s no good soon as you start modding the engine as it cant be remapped.
Flintstones - July 21st, 2011 at 11:13 PM
I had an early squareback some years ago and transplanted a TLE engine into it, but, I didn't connect the original computer.
I hooked up a microtech instead. Reason for, is so that I could tune it for when I wanted to go turbo.
It was great to just jump in and turn the key and, it always started no matter what the weather conditions were.
Cheers

I've gone back to carbies (DRLA).
Well set-up EFI is obviously superior in many ways, but unless you have the tools, time and know-how, fine tuning the mapping of a custom setup will
bankrupt you. There is always room for improvement and more investment and without fine tuning it is not worth doing. It will use more fuel than
carbies. Also as someone mentioned above (and particularly with MAP systems), if anything changes, eg. your muffler is replaced, you're back to
square - 1 with your mapping.

The best I feel is the way I done it, and that is fitting a type 4 motor, up'ed to 2000cc, with D jet FI

I have a TLE that I'm converting to Suby. That means in a few months my 1600 Efi engine will be for sale .. Smooth as silk.. Kind of
