Hi guiys
How do i tell if my '66 Type 3 fastback is a 6 volt or 12 volt system?
Also, if anyone has any type 3 stuff they may want to give away please let me know
Cheers
Muz
The 66 should be 6 volt,12volt came in 1968 and had a 12v sticker inside the R/H door pillar,or lift the rear seat and check the battery.
Pull out a blulb and see what its running now,
Or just look and see if it has 6v or 12v stamped on the top of the generator.
could have been updated in the last 45 years Les...lol but no sticker repl.

6 vlt battery is small and square...12 is big heavy rectangle

Put volt meter across the battery terminals and test the voltage. If it has a little more than 6 volts and starts its a 6 volt car still. If it has more than 12 volts it's been converted.

Thanks for all the replies guys
No battery in the car when i got it, (probably fell out of the huge rust hole that is in its place).
Will check the globes tomorrow to see what is on them.
(should have thought of this before)
Generator or coil is easier.
It has 7V50A on the generator.
So i presume its 6Volt
yep! 6v it is then

cut that gen in half an it could be 3 Volt?
if u r in Bris
I hve a 12 vlt here
all globes
starter and gen plus wiper needs changin
6 and 12v battery avail
don't forget all the relays, voltage reg and also the fan housing need to be changed as the 12v gen is a larger diameter and wont fit.
have fun
The 6 volt system works quite well,I still run it in my Ghia with no problems, get a decent battery, good leads and earths,6volt halogen globes and drive it.
oh strewth!!
bigger job than i expected.
i have a parts notchback which has a "12v" sticker
in the door, might rip the loom out of that.
then just need to change to alternator and starter, is that correct?...or dizzy as well?
let me know a price on your parts please bushed...will have to wait until the new year....wife smashed her car the other night
prob don't need loom but coil !!
dizzy shoul be ok
radio??
wiper mtr or a resistor to ure 6 vlt one
horn may work better with 12 v
