Yah check them every so often. But no wear. The bottom 1 sheared off and then the top popped out. All ok not really any damage to the car. Cant say the same about the road.

That is scary!

Does your car have the full bump stop?

telf - November 28th, 2011 at 01:14 PM

no i chopped them off.

Lucky you wernt going any faster!

I was just exiting a double round about and think that the turn made it happen. Don't think it would have happened on the straight, but May be wrong. New ball joints arrive tomorrow so back on the road by wed night. Its a daily driver so it does get hammered abit.

This is how it looked 20 mins before.

vlad01 - November 28th, 2011 at 02:20 PM

Holy shit! you didn't have aftermarket ball joints did you?

Or perhaps rust pitting to the ball joint pins?

telf - November 28th, 2011 at 02:29 PM

No they were German. Haven't had a real good look yet.

Burrelli - November 29th, 2011 at 07:58 AM

Without the bump stop there is nothing to stop the ball joint going to an angle it was not designed to. I'd say If you have a look at the ball joint you will see where it had reached its limit of travel and the inner ball part had been hitting on the outer. I've seen that in type1's as well.

Matty v - November 29th, 2011 at 08:05 AM

What height or settings are you running?looking at lowering my fastie?

telf - November 29th, 2011 at 08:31 AM

Its 3 outer splines at the front and 2 outer at the back.
Its been that low for about 3 years with no problems. so ill just make sure i replace them abit more often. But hopefully in the not to distant future it'll have a type 1 narrowed beam.

All sorted tonight so back on the road. Now to terrorise some speed humps.

Matty v - December 1st, 2011 at 06:44 AM

Sweet good to hear your back on the road. Did you lower the car yourself?

telf - December 1st, 2011 at 04:58 PM

Yah me and my mate did it about 4 years ago. The type 3 is the easiest to lower out of the VW family.
