Radars or BRM's on Type 3's
satori - December 6th, 2011 at 01:24 PM

Hey hey.

As you might of saw from my last topic, im doing up a 66 squareback with later 72 pan (4 stud). I was really pumped to get a set of Radars or 5 spoke BRMs using a 4 to 5 stud adaptor. But after looking into it, it seems that the offset is all wrong and would rub on guards. I was checking out some 17x7 40ET radars and though I might be in with a chance as the stock wheels are supposed to be 46ET. Yeah I know the rim width is greater but after measuring the distance under the guards with stock rims there seems to be at least 40mm to the outer edge if guard was rolled. If anyone has any experience in this I would love to hear your opion. thanks

Not a hope in hell of fitting any of the above wheels with IRS and adaptors. The 17x7s with et 40 will fit with the correct tyre choice and swing axle.

The 15in brms and radars you will need to do an axle swap (early beetle) to fit them under the guards. (see photos of Vicelaw's notch)

However if your car is pre64 and has the drums with the corkscrew in the centre you wil be able to fit as they are thinner. (see photos of my old red notch with empi 5s on or radars)

Oh and 165 and 135 tyres if you are going LOW!!!

That sucks. I was pretty much design the car around the wheels :D I think I might just go for a set of 5.5" stockers with white walls. Anyone got a set?

Careful with the off set on the back.

To run the 17x7s on the rear, can you put the early wide 5 drum on the IRS? I'm not 100% sure but I think it goes straight on. You would maybe have to trim the bump stop pad to clear the wheel.

Then a CSP Wide 5 disc brake kit on the front.

Thats where you will have to spend some cash.

Again I'm not 100% sure their kits work with rear drums? but I think they do.

You would have to get a bigger master cylinder with the kit aswell.

That should be a way to do it or am I missing something?
