Rust!
typ3 three - January 2nd, 2012 at 10:27 PM

I am looking to buy a Late Type 3 and have noticed that most have rust and i was wondering were is first place rust forms when im looking to buy a rust free one because lots of people get caught with unseen rust or rust that is worst than first thought.

The trouble with type 3 is they can look in reasonable condition UNTIL you take off those massive guards. Then it looks like termites have been living their for years. Be careful, very careful when inspecting. Not as good rust proofing as the beetles, me thinks.:fakesniff: My2c

Check under carpet - especially around rear as the heater outlets cause condensation. Also battery box and rain water gutter under window wipers. Good luck they are awesome cars when you find a good one.

i recently purchased my first type 3 wagon 2 weeks ago. Definintly look underneath the carpet on the drivers side and under the back seat where the battery lives. Theses were the worst rusted parts in mine

around rear windows
inner wheel wells
all hang on guards in the corners
floor
heater channels
in a square back around the rear hatch hinges
lower doors
front cowl near the windshield
all pillers real bad in notches on the rear
pretty much anywhere water could gather

pour some water in the vent under the windscreen and see if it comes out under the dash, you got more rust!

Yea thanks it makes it easier when looking for an easy project not that i couldn't fix the rust its just that it would be easier to get a rust free one.

Hi, i am also loking for a tpye 3 in good nick. the best thing you can do is get your hands on a Bently publication Workshop Manual. Santa bought me one for the Volkswagen type3 1961-1967. it has 1152 pages & over 2000 ilustration & diagrams. It tells you absolutly everthing you would ever want to know. Even points where water enters the body, runs to settles & rusts. ope this helps.

That might be later type 3. Mine was leaking, ended up being some old leaves stuck in the rubber drain tubes causing overflow.

Bentley Stock number V367. ISBN 0-8376-1192-X. Ive got a few manuals from Amazon & e-bay & have found the Bentley manuals to be the best by a long way. They cost a bit more but are worth every cent. Hope this helps.
