Port SErvice Charges
tothemaxx - January 12th, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Hi Guys,

Just been contacted by the frieght agent and they gave me break down of the custom fees and charges and the Port Service Charges are $700?!! Does this sound right? I was told that it is the standard charges and that they charge $65 per cubic metre and the KG is 11.4 cbm. When I was organising the shipping earlier the shipping company I am dealing with stated that it is an unknown charges so I might not be subjected to it but now I am told that it is compulsary for all cars imported into this country. Well after some complaints to the frieght agent they reduced it $150 so doe that mean different freight fowarder charges different Port Service Charges Fee? Any more affordable company that anyone can recommend me to? Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks

Pat

Hi there,

I have imported 1 x car before and have 2 x more on the water right now. I also import about a dozen containers a year with my business. I know all too well about sneaky port charges. Basically you're at the mercy of the ports and they can and often will charge what they want. There are no real set rules for pricing. Well not what they follow anyway. What you've been quoted actually sounds about the norm.

It all helps having a good forwarder with a good relationship with the ports. The freight forwarder I use are very good and I would recommend them for sure. Contact russell@qldcustoms.com.au tell him Clint from Colony BMX sent you.

Good luck!

Oh by the way, what car have you got coming?

I'm with the other guys...sounds about right. I import shipments and the different charges you get are strange and somewhat insane. I do my own freight forwarding to save some money, as customs house is close to me. Between paying the overseas shipping costs, the local shipping/clearing/port costs, the customs costs & GST, the AQIS costs and then the local delivery costs it's a bit of a nightmare.

But...it's all part of the deal. Once you've done it the first time it gets easier.

Yeah they love their fees... it's all worth it in the end though once your car arrives.
