RHD Mirror arms for left hand door
Yogie - February 28th, 2012 at 07:18 AM
I have been searching for years to find a mirror for the passenger door of a RHD late model ghia without any luck. All the ones available are for LHD
cars and the arm doesn't raise high enough to see it properly over the top of the door when you are sitting on the right hand side of the car.
Anyway, I have decided to get one made instead and wanted to know if anyone else would be interested in buying one as well. This is the arm only I am
getting made and you would have to buy and fit the mirror body and the parts that attach it to the door elsewhere.
If you are interested, let me know as they will be made in the next month or so and the price would be about $150 posted.

I have been looking at all sorts of mirror arms in swap meets and have never found one that will work. If anyone has found something, that would be
great but my last resort is to get one made to order. I just thought there may be some other late ghia owners would like a proper mirror for the
passenger side as well.

I have a number of left side mirrors.
Do you need the square or teardrop style?

Yes they have a long arm , and are very different to the RHS on the type 3s, so they are available...
I'm sure I've seen them about at swap meets etc...??
what about T3D in the UK?

Have a look at the old Datsun 120Y 1600 180B mirrors they had a left and right hand mirror mounted with 2 screws and rise high enough to be used on
both sides of the vehicle,I have had a R/H unit on my Ghia for almost 40 years but never bothered with the left side.

Cruiser. The mirror itself is a square shape but it is the arm that is the problem. It has to mount (sort of) sideways on to the door but raise it
up which takes out all of the mirror arms I have looked at (I have been looking in swap meets for years).
Grumble, I haven't looked at non VW arms so I might have a look and see if they can be adapted.
Thanks Guys

Lee,
I have seen pictures of the type 3 mirrors and they look to be able to do the job but never seen one for sale anywhere.

I looked on T3D in the UK site but only early type 3 mirrors..
Must be "rare as" ....
optional accessory Only on RHD cars...
and they are rare too...

You can buy new the late squarish ones with long arms but they have the slightly different back to stock. Assuming this is the one you are looking
for?

That is the wrong arm. It is not just a long arm but one that raises the mirror as well. It is the mirror image of this one http://www.airheadparts.com/vintage-vw-parts/exteriormirrors/side-view-mirror... that I am after.

yes rare indeed. I have been looking for correct RHD late type 3 mirrors forever, sill can not find even used ones.
contemplating making my owns ones using new and used parts and getting glass cut.
Will get to this latter on, expensive exercise that has little change of actually working.
Yogie - March 2nd, 2012 at 08:53 PM
I have been looking to make one out of different parts as well but just can't find the arms. That is why I am looking at getting some made, in case
others want some as well. I figured I can't be the only one looking for them but the price could well be an issue for a lot of people. For me, I
just want one and will pay whatever I need to get one.

I tried to have glass cut for a Mirror not worth the trouble , have you tried parts supplier in the US most items are quite reasonable

VW Heritage only seem to list the teardrop ones too
they look like they would have the same problem as the brazilian bug ones, too close to the body cos the arm is too short.
No wonder you see so many with Kmart and Datsun mirrors

dam! you beat me to it.
I was going to say vw heritage has a lot of RHD specific parts and they are honest to which they recommend as the quality OEM and which are not so
good.
but unfortunately they don't have our mirrors that we want
