I'm looking at getting some brms for an early lowered fasty and was wondering if anyone has had experience fitting them? They are 5 on 205 lug pattern 15 inch x 5 inch wide wheels with 3.688 inch back spacing. The car is lowered 2 outer splines... Will I be able to fit them and find a tyre which allows reasonable turning? Or is a shortened beam the only option?
You will have problems front and rear with just about any after market wide 5 wheel on a lowered early type3. except 63 model maybe.
Your standard wheel offset is +46
Original BRMs are +12 Flat4 +15
With these and the standard set up in the rear they will hit the guards with a 165 tyre and in the front not much turning before they hit the guards
even with a 135 tyre on a lowered car.
The wheels you said you are looking at seem to have more offset. Maybe +20 Maybe a little more.
I think you need an offset of +35 - +40 to bolt wheels on a moderately lowered standard car and have no rubbing issues.
2 splines is a lot 110mm to 120mm lower than standard.
most type3s you see that low with after market wide5 wheels will have short axles in the rear and a narrowed type1 front end.

What year is the type 3?
Short axle swap to fit em... there is a blue notch with a set of 4in wide brm wheels in my rides (in members rides)had to do the swap to fit em.
What year is car?
Thanks for the link to the thread it explains it all. The fasty is a 68 but I was also considering putting a similar wheel on my 65 notch. I'm guessing a short axle swap for both Adam? Are there any cool rims that would bolt straight on?
This is my son's 64 Square with BRM's fitted, 5.0 rear and 4.5 fronts with 145 all round, no modifications wheels clear perfectly, so there are rims out the that will fit with out mods
64 has a thinner drum to 65 on cars, my 63 had 5 spokes on the back and fitted fine without the axle swap.
>64 drums have a swirl on the centre of the drum 65> drums have a 5 spoke pattern that look similar to a Fuch and are a wider drum.
Vicelore's 67 notch with shorter axles and 4.5 x 15 Brms all round 165 x 15 on the rear and 135 on the front (the way it should be!)
Racer, 145 on the rear!! is that so the wheels fit?
Here are the early and late drums, the late ones 65> are on the far left and the earlier >64 are on the right with the swirl or twist in the middle, the earlier drums are a thinner width than the later drums allowing 5.5 in wheels to fit.

The 68 is 5 stud with the thick drum and swing axle.
Is it possible to get the early drums and just swap them?
possibly, if u could find some, would need all other components in the drum. convert your car to 5 x 130 porsche pattern and use late beetle rear drums etc.
This post makes me kringe.. was a fun time tho ay empi..
