Type 3 questions - post 70's squarebacks
brendanwright - April 17th, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Hi All,

Got some questions re post 70's squarebacks that i'm hoping someone might be able to help with.

1. Do 15" fuchs or empi 8 spoke wheels fit the standard stud pattern of a post 70's squareback?? if not, is there much hassle to make them fit??
2. How low is a squareback when it has been lowered all 3 splines on the front & back?? Is it legal in NSW to be this low??

Thanks very much for your help people, it's much appreciated.

3 splines in the front will need you to modify the bump stop rubbers. two splines in the rear is damn low, almost too low, just depends on what look your trying to achieve. 3 front and two rear will lower the car to where it will appear level. That is if your suspension is even. From there you can go lower again by going a tyre like a 185/45/15 which lowers the car another1-2 inches. Unless you want to buggerise around redrilling hubs and discs go the good old four stud. If you are after wheels i have a set of new superlights with low profile tyres ready to roll spare. 15 x 6 and 15 x 7 which fit on a 3spline and two spline lowered car. i am about to lower my 70 square, i don,t touch the back, i just fill it up with a decent sized tyre and lower the front 3 splines which gives it the old school hot rod raked stance. all different looks just depends which look floats your boat. Hope this helps

Nice work, thanks heaps for the feedback mate. Any chance you can post a few pics of yours once you've done the lowering?? Would be good to see what it looks like. I had a 73 squareback a few years back & had it lowered 2 splines front & back & it sat pretty nice, looking at getting into another one maybe in the near future & just wondering about ride height etc.
I had superlites on my old squareback & they looked alright, looking to do something different this time.
Do you know if it's much trouble to change the stud pattern to 5 stud to accommodate Fuchs?? And then do you need to change the brakes??
Thanks again for the advice.

if you buy a 4 stud car you will need to get the front discs drilled and studded and the rear the same.

great thanks mate, much appreciated.

Depends on the width of the fuchs... 8 spokes might not fit when its that low.

185 tyres prob wont fit either (guard rub) go the good ol 135 and 165set up

My 2c

empi 8 spoke fit fine with 185 tyres but there isn't much room left.

Fuchs have more friendly offset, but like Empi says, depends of the width.

anywhere from 4.5 to 7 wide will work. 7 need correct offset and tyre selection

Has anyone got a post 70's squareback that has been lowered that they can post some pics of?? Would be good to see what it looks like dropped......

I'd like to see the 185s on the 8 spokes and lowered 3 splines.

Eccles car (Dragstersforlife) has a similar dimension wheel to the 8 spoke on the back of his car and a 165 is a squeeze at best.

Hey gents, another question this time re disc brakes on the rear of a post 70's squareback. Is there a kit out there that fits the rear without too much modification?? I guess it really depends on the stud pattern of the wheels right?? Any advice would be great.

Cheers,
B

scot70wagon - May 4th, 2012 at 10:52 PM

mate i have a set here that i here i took off a square. complete set up , uses standard cables just needs new pads . you can have them for 200 if you want them.

brendanwright - May 6th, 2012 at 06:30 PM

hey scot, what make are the brakes?? And are they just a standard brake pad that are easy to replace?? Cheers mate....

PS - Do you own the green sqaureback that i've seen on here previously??

scot70wagon - May 7th, 2012 at 08:55 AM

i,m led to believe that they are shermans. brake pads are easily obtained as they aren,t anything to exotic. they are a good system , i swapped them out of another car i had before i sold it, but i am now going to run porsche brakes so i don,t need them anymore. my old car is the light blue squareback that was in the aussie vw mag in the nationals write up for last year.
