Which Fasty is best?
davodawg - June 20th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Hi volks. At some point in time, I'm gonna have to stop ignoring my (sometimes disturbingly primal) urges and buy myself a Fastback. I want an early
one and I'm told that the last of these had discs, four-stud wheels and semi-traling links (which'd be nice, because I see a big-inch Type 4 in its
future).
So which model do I want? Is it a 67 or 68 (as I suspect) or have I just described some mythical Type 3 of legend that never really existed?
Also, if anybody has one they don't need any longer...(I have cash and those urges I mentioned).

Yo Matty. I had a Notch years and years (and years) ago. Liked it, too, but I always reckoned the Fastback was the better looking version.
Got a Kodak of your car (or a link to one)?
Meantime, am I right? Is the 67/68 Notch/Fasty the model to go for?
Joel - June 20th, 2012 at 03:43 PM
68 would be the first year of discs from memory, but you'd have to go 69 to get factory IRS, and then 70 was first year of the shark nose fatchicks
so your limited to 69 if you want factory disc and IRS but early bumpers.
In saying that though Type 3s are piece of piss to convert to IRS though if you can get the sub-frame from a later car.
VW-VARIANT-L - June 20th, 2012 at 05:08 PM
68 automatics have the IRS, but you would have close to zero chance finding one in Australia. Most 68's built in Australia were 5 stud, swing axle,
all drum set up.
69's all have 4 stud, IRS and disc brake front in Australia, and still have the early body shape. So this is what you are looking for.

mate as the lads said... 68/69 is a good year then you go into the not so skinny version of the Type 3
what are you actually looking for? resto? rust? rat? daily? regoed? etc etc
PM me your email... ill send you links to the 68/70... But be careful you may go back to a Notch
do you want links to both?

buy a 67, 12 volt , old style bumpers and indicators, last of the drums allround.. The best looking fasty. if you want to 'modernise' it , easy to
convert to front discs , just bolt on late model spindles and disc brakes (front) and 4 stud rear drums. The 73 discs were bigger again, used on the
vw/porsche 914, but hard to find, 69-72 more common and repro parts available. Again the hi-back front seats up to 72 also slot straight in. The later
front seats have a third mount. Again converting the rear end to irs , much is bolt on but the rear engine mount requires some welding. The early wiper
arms used a tapered shaft and would become loose, the later models the arm had a nut to hold the wiper arm on, but they reversed the arm orientation.
The "68 only" wiper arms and spindles bolt straight into an early model.Anyway without 'bagging' the beetle the type 3 was a far nicer vehicle to
drive and more room .Woul
d happily cruise on the freeway at 75mph.
best of luck

buy a fattie much better driver
empi - June 21st, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Ok, 68 is the first year of 4 stud and 12V, in Ausrtralia there are a few 68s that have the 5 stud brakes but they are few and far between and an
australian quirk.
68 will be a swing axle rear end. A 69 will have IRS. 68 will also be the first of fuel flap on the front D/s guard.
69 will also have a different air vent knobs on the dash to a >68.
This being said a type 3 can be easily converted to disc with ALL bolt on parts from a later model (discs, dual circuit master cyl, etc) also a 12v
conversion isnt hard to do either, all of which i have done to my notch (1965).
My advice find the car (year + shape) you like and convert.

davodawg - June 21st, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Hey out there. Thanks to everybody who's weighed in on this debate. Seems like any early Fasty will give me the look I want and I can modify the
underneath bits to make it do what I want.
Happy to listen to all suggestions and, in the meantime, just wanted to say I appreciate the info given up so far.

notice how its all the type 3 heads that posted, all a little bias too
Joel - June 21st, 2012 at 06:25 PM
Well I certainly don't fit into that category.
The only one I ever owned was bought for the rear end and gearbox then scrapped
I know, shun the murderous outsider

As far as I know there were some small handful imported here and there but not officially by vw? I believe by other dealers other than vw??
the official VW record haven't mentioned any being ever imported. Someone got any info to prove otherwise? would love to track some cars down for
myself
MickH - August 13th, 2012 at 07:56 AM
They were private imports.
