I've spoken to 3 of the guys (the 2 Splitties and green and white Bay) and they had a ball. The temp was up a bit and the flies gave 'em heaps till sundown, but otherwise good time had by all.
Cheers, Ian.

77bay - October 11th, 2005 at 07:30 AM

Top pics guys. Looks like a lot of fun was had. Were the any problems engine wise on the trip?

YIOughta - October 11th, 2005 at 07:34 AM

at least 2 of those bays seem to have standard wheels - thats pretty impressive

Desert Bug - October 11th, 2005 at 07:44 AM

G'day,
77bay, the only engine trouble was a hole in a piston in one of the Bays, they took the pushrods out and took the plug lead off and drove from Birdsville Qld to Cent Vic on 3 cylinders. Another crack a generator pulley. Otherwise no problems. All Kombis crossed the Desert unaided (no towing).
Cheers, Ian.

The bronze coloured one has BA Falcom 16x6.5s with Allterrain offroad tyres. The green and white bay has 15x6 Merc rims with 215/75 Allterrains allround.

They all ran same size all round and generally 215s, so shows you don't need monster tyres to play in the sand.

Cheers, Ian.

What a hoot!!

Desert Bug - October 11th, 2005 at 01:14 PM

G'day,

Yeah Rhys I was feeling a bit out of it way up here with no holidays due etc, etc, but they all reckon they're jealous of us living it every day, and we do enjoy it.

VWCOOL, all the Bays had standard height suspension but taller tyres, the splitties are sitting a little high than stock with Bay front ends and the '63 Dualcab has bay rear end transplant and '67 still has reduction hubs.

Cheers, Ian.
