Beetle colapsible column in Australia
psimitar - August 6th, 2018 at 12:48 AM

Sup peeps.

So I've been doing a bit of research regarding retrofitting a collapsible column into my 60 Bug and keeping the original steering wheel.

It seems as though between 68 and 72 the column was collapsible but still had the early spline for the D-ring style bakerlite steering wheels.

However, Aus production being what it was then did this European and USA safety update make it's way to these sunny shores and within that 4 year period?

And if it did then I hope I can find one in usable condition.

Cheers,
Mike

Cut and join the 2 different columns together

add an internal sleeve and plug weld in a few places or pin through both sections to get the collapsible column

Don't forget to measure the original column to get correct length required

My German build '68 has a collapsible section (like mesh) in the column and uses a D ring steering wheel so that may work. Probably pick up one however I have no idea about lengths

On my son's 65, I used the original outer sleeve to keep the original look, and just swapped out the solid column for the collapsible/mesh one.
It fit with no mods at all.
