IRS on 65 splitty

Can Anyone tell me if you can use a 1973 type 3 gearbox in the conversion to IRS on a split bus.
I know you can use a post 1969 bug box , but someone said a type 3 box would work
Any Ideas Folks

Yes you can use a Type 3 IRS box in an IRS conversion for a split screen, but you will need to use the splitty nose cone and hockey stick.
Same goes for the Beetle box too.

Thanks for the info, I had a look at a suitable type 3 this morning. Is $500 an OK price for a just out of rego 1600 T3 with a good engine and gearbox?and a pretty good body?

I bet 3rd gear syncro in the box will be fzzzrt, in the Type 3's they always seem to be.
$500.00...........mmmmmm bit hard to say without looking at it, I gues it would be OK if you can sell what you don't need and get the parts you need for nothin!!

Yes it will go...but!

The ratios aren't that great if you are gonna run a mild engine....If you have more torque, then it will be ok......Use baywindow bus bits to get it in. From the spring plate back and use the TIII axles & mix & match the CVs. TIII inner, Bus outer. Then all you have to do is mod the diagonal arms to fit...The splitty is narrower!...Been done, takes a bit of work though....If you have the bucks give Indian a call...Kimms kit is very good, if a little pricey...But he has done a lot of work on the kit!

Thanks for that, I'm using a mildish type 4, 2 litre, I spent twenty years doing architectural metalwork and prototyping various products so I think Ive got it figured out, Ive also had experience building sidecars both road and race and the rear end of a Kombi seems simple by comparison but again thanks for the info,Theres no substitute for experience.

My brother is pretty clever too!...He did it to his 15window deluxe a little while back...TOTALLY transformed the way that sucker cruises...!
