any difference? ie. can i take the exhaust system off a 1500 out of a 68 beetle and put it on a 1600 dual port? the pipes are the same sizes and what not? or have vw pulled a shifty and made them slightly different?

1300 to 1600 exhausts are all the same. All will fit any engine 1300 to 1600.

there are some dual pre heat pipes mufflers that are different

Yeah, I have a '76 which had dual preheater pipes, but it was cheaper to change the manifold and get the normal exhaust than source the dual pipe exhaust system.
