Ok all you VDub buffs that carry seemingly useless information until a despirado is in need. I'm your despirado.

This Dog-O-War (71 Baja) is bleeding down the inside of its back legs (left hand side) and spraying oil all over the rin on the right hand side. The left is definately the worst with a decent puddle lying on the inside of the rin and down the wall in the mornings.

What's the fix?
What tools will I need?
Should I be still driving it?

Oh and if you in Newcastle and you see me coming behind you, Change lanes. The brakes have all but gone. Need to pump them twice, sometimes three times for every stop / slow down other wise the floor behind the pedal gets in the road.
Ripplybulldog and I have bled the brakes twice but to little effect.

Is this the master cylinder doing this?
If so / if not, what do I have to do?
What special tool do I need?

Any input kindly appreciated,

Hi Ben, thanx for the reply.

Yeah it seems to be Gear oil as its very black and quite thick. Much thicker than I would have thought brake fluid to be. I'm getting familiar with brake fluid as I've beld them three times.

This being said I did have to top up the brake fluid the other morn before heading out.

Thanks for the run down on the tools. I'll get my A into G and source the 36 and the breaker bar.

Are you the Ben Durie of Teralba by the way? I've heard excellent reviews of your workshop there.

Tip of the day.
Use some aquarium clear air pump hose when bleeding brakes. Heaps cleaner and better at keeping air out.

Bronze sounds like the rear axle seals.

I suggest that you go along n see Ben n get it fixed properly.

Do you know what the best fix for leaking rear axles seals?

An IRS conversion :D

When my baja was swingaxle those seals would drive me nuts. They seemed to die prematurely. Then I found out that not all bearing retainers are the same depth!
Turns out I had like 9mm deep retainers when I should've had about 6mm deep retainers. So basically the whole axle could move side to side 3mm. Because the bearing is a tight fit in it's outer housing it didn't move much at first. Then as time went on a clunk in the rear developed (the bearing and axle moving 3mm side to side). Then the bearing got looser and looser in it's housing until I could move the wheel in and out 3mm when the car was jacked up in the air. That's when I figured out what the clunk was. The axles seals didn't like moving 3mm across their runners all the time, so they kept dying. That's my story anyway...

There are some tricks to stopping those leaks and yes you do need to have the correct retainers with the correct axles etc etc etc....

the assembly of the seals is important as well. there are some FAT O rings available nowdays which help.
Also check that the brg retainers are NOT warped from wear n tear over the years.

yeah i was thinking... isn't bronzes' bug a super... and don't leaky axle seals only occur on swing axles? mmmm Yeah it drove me nuts as well... i just used the fat o-rings as well as some nice thicker washer shim things as the ones u get with the brazilian "stevaux" kit deformed and lost tension on the small o-ring and leaked shit everywhere

Thanx for your help Guys. I will get it done properly as I have the funds now. Thanks for all your advice. The dogs not a super but. I'll print this out and pass it into the mechanic. I also am getting the master cylinder seals and hopefully a carby kit put in.

Bronze , make sure that the gear box Gear Oil level is topped up again , prefferable with Hypoid Gear Oil.
I have swing axles and thought a leak in one of my axle boots wasnt too bad. Just fixed the boot. Didnt check the gear oil level. About a week later started getting a slight whine in diff, then checked oil .. Too late. Still going, just have a new noise added.
