1963 ragtop beetle project - gone to a new home
Dasdubber - April 6th, 2004 at 09:23 PM

Due to some forum problems I can't post replies to the other thread and the pictures aren't loading - I am not sure how many posts were lost so I guess I'll start again here.

Here is a pic of the 36hp doghouse shroud with fibreglass oil cooler extension piece to accommodate the type IV cooler.

And another pic this time from behind...

Here the alternator was bottoming out on the stand on the front lip. Fortunately was able to send the stand back and had it replaced with one that wasn't machined down so far in the cradle - quick mockup tonight shows it is a much better fit.

Sorted out the pulley problems as well - due to the different position of the fanshroud, the alternator pulley doesn't line up with the crank pulley. Hard to explain how I got it sorted so I'll take some pics soon.

Also rear spacers are on (35mm width) so wheels sit nicely under the gaurds. Will be getting the rollcage sorted soon, then exhaust, then all systems go for body work to hopefully have it all done for valla (fingers crossed).

Alan

New alternator stand is a much better fit - still some minor clearancing required on stand but alternator is sitting in cradle nicely now.

Pulley was sorted by putting a collar which slips over the woodruff key on back to front, then the front half of the pulley back to front, then used the front half of a replacement pulley for the actual front half (if that all makes sense).

Here is a pic of the rear wheel with spacer in place (35mm).

Dasdubber - April 7th, 2004 at 09:29 PM

And another reverse angle shot - tyre is sitting nice and flush with edge of gaurd - camber is pretty much what I was after - may have to raise rear up slightly once all weight is loaded in the car.

On the removable rear apron mod had to drill out the lower two bolt holes and then trim the collar on the inside to clear the 5mm thick steel brackets (see next pic)

Dasdubber - April 7th, 2004 at 09:41 PM

Here are the two steel 5mm thick plates around 250mm long and 30mm wide. These are to provide some support so the bolts that hold the mudgaurds on will sandwich the apron in and hold it in place. Steel nuts are welded on after drilling holes to clear the collar left behind.

Dasdubber - April 7th, 2004 at 09:42 PM

Here is the plate fitted up (obviously without the rear apron).

Dasdubber - April 7th, 2004 at 09:46 PM

This is to show how much of the rear apron (replacement) panel had to be trimmed to clear the body when installing/removing it.

Dasdubber - April 7th, 2004 at 09:49 PM

Just a few of the AN fittings for the carbs/regulator etc.

Dasdubber - April 7th, 2004 at 09:51 PM

Peak-a-boo...I see a rear sway bar hiding in there. Will be making a trip to powdercoater soon. Rear koni shocks are awaiting installation. Fronts will on the way from the US shortly.

Craig Torrens - April 7th, 2004 at 11:05 PM

mmm do you want to come down to Syd and finish some of my projects !

Nice work.

Che Castro - April 8th, 2004 at 03:59 PM

wow awesome!

just wondering how come you are going swing axle instead of 4 joint?

56astro - April 8th, 2004 at 04:12 PM

Love ya work Alan

Dasdubber - April 8th, 2004 at 09:12 PM

Thanks again guys - c'mon Craig I have a 68 bug as well as my 64 double door split waiting in line for resto after this one!! Also trying to finish reno's on our house (Something which was taken care of for you :P

Swingaxle was because originally I was going more a cal-looker with fuchs, fats and skinnys - I bought a heavy duty side plate and super diff from the US so once I had them I didn't want to turn back to IRS. If I had my time again I'd start with a ball joint IRS pan though. Ah well.

Tomorrow will bring the completion of rear apron, hopefully final mockup of cooling "tin", weld in nuts onto firewall to mount regulator. Car is booked in next week for 4 point roll cage.

Brad - April 8th, 2004 at 09:21 PM

who is doing your cage ?

Dasdubber - April 8th, 2004 at 09:42 PM

George at Custom Offroad - I'm sure you know him well. He did my mate Brad's in his oval and it looked mighty fine.

Brad - April 8th, 2004 at 09:45 PM

rrrr that is Brad's oval, yeah you could say I know him ... ok I spend way to much time in there ... great guy ...

seagull - April 9th, 2004 at 12:43 AM

what are these wheels called ? pattern ? thanks seagull

Dasdubber - April 9th, 2004 at 11:27 PM

Yep Brad George is a good bloke - hope he gives me a good price on the cage - we've spent enough money there recently too!

Wheels are replica Porsche 5x130 Cup3 (Turbo Twist) - 17x7.5 ET52

Dasdubber - April 12th, 2004 at 08:34 PM

Welded on the nuts (to firewall) to mount the regulator the other day...

Dasdubber - April 12th, 2004 at 08:44 PM

Another mock-up of engine - pretty much finalised engine "tin wear" fit - had to grind and clearance the cylinder shroud etc to get everything to fit properly.

Dasdubber - April 12th, 2004 at 08:54 PM

Had a mock-up of interior tonight - they need to be in so the roll cage can be fabbed in this coming week.

Dasdubber - April 12th, 2004 at 08:56 PM
