Help! Transport company has destroyed my Deluxe 1967 vw v8 powered kombi
VIKINGV8VW - January 21st, 2005 at 06:13 PM

Hello everyone I have a 1967 deluxe kombi which i just finished restoring and have modified it by putting a v8 into it! I recently moved to sydney nsw and had the car moved via a transport company called smb! Sydney Melbourne Brisbane! I did this because i didnt want to damage my brand new paint job on the shitty hume! or anything for that matter!
I now have a car that doesnt turn left has a bent torsion bar front shocker is bent aswell! and a fucked steering box! MY engine mount is bent and scratched! i have heaps of stone chips on my kombi and scratches! the radiator has a huge hole in it and the custom alloy scoop is ruined too! the car was driven on and off the truck with no water in the radiator and it smells burnt and awefull! I have spoken to the transport company on numerous occasions since! They seem very unhelpfull and are telling me that certain parts arent covered because of wear and tear! BULLSHIT! i have spent 15000 dollars on this car so far! there is a huge list of other things that have been damaged too! Please someone help!

talk to consumer affairs if the company doesnt want to help you cause their insurance should cover any damage while the car is their custody

bugboymatt - January 21st, 2005 at 06:18 PM

Mate i can understand you being pished off at them...............I would be. thats shockin. Hope you get it sorted for the good.

would also be curious as to pics and details on the conversion... i so wanna put something more in my dcab.

Gibbo - January 21st, 2005 at 06:28 PM

Get some representation, get them to send a letter explaining that you are prepared to start legal procedings.

And yes go to the office of fair trading.

VIKINGV8VW - January 21st, 2005 at 06:32 PM

My aunty works for the fair trading! and she told me i have to have a tribunal hearing! i also have to photo the whole car! which is really annoying! i have a list from helll on the car and damage

I just sent a car from here to Sydney with Toll Transport and the driver went around the car with a check sheet to mark any damage prior to loading.I pointed out some small blemishes on the car and he went overboard even noting tiny stone chips which I didn't even know were there. Their service was second to none-a bit dearer than some though-$760 from Whyalla SA to Sydney.Would use them again without a doubt.

VIKINGV8VW - January 22nd, 2005 at 09:59 AM

no i didnt check the odometer readings why would u u would have to be seriously psycho to do that! i just wasnt expecting it all to happen! the guy i talked to assured me that my car would be fine and said they even move ferarri's! i dont believe that now! he has a completely different attitude now and tells me that they dont wear certain things! like handbrake! and my steering box or my motor for a fact! they say that these things are wear and tear! BULLSHIT!!! thanks to u all for your help im not going to give up on this one!!!!! i will take photos and may get a solicitor!

VIKINGV8VW - January 22nd, 2005 at 10:10 AM

i cant believe how nasty this all is! the way they explained it was like any damage and you get payed out!

sax - January 22nd, 2005 at 11:17 PM

I'm a courier, take it from me when I say you could be screwed.

Get details of their transit insurance, and try and lodge a claim behind their backs. They wont because they will pay higher premiums the following year if they do.

ColumBUS - January 23rd, 2005 at 01:15 AM

mate whatever you do. stick it to the man.
hope it works out for you, they cant get away with it mate.

i just hope u have a lot of pictures of the car before u got it transported

WABaja - January 23rd, 2005 at 02:01 AM

Get Quotes for proffesional reapir of the damage...

vwtyp2 - January 23rd, 2005 at 10:12 AM

first of all, I'm sorry to hear about the damage to your car.

I sent a car from S.A. to NSW recently.
it. was a '71 panel.
the guy there told me that because the car was more than 30 y.o. there is no insurance.
Is this b.s. or what?
hopefully you're not in the same boat.

helbus - January 23rd, 2005 at 12:43 PM

Go through your own insurance company. They will operate on your behalf, because they won't want to fork out for all the repairs.

If you dont have vehicle insurance, then in my opinion it was a silly thing to own or move a car around with out insurance, especially if you spent $15k on it.

Shannons or Vigil insurance will cover a car for transport even if it is unregistered. It is part of their laid up policy.

VIKINGV8VW - January 28th, 2005 at 11:05 AM

WEll ive learnt my lesson now! Havnt i! ok well ive had some quotes done and there in the thousands so i may get something back to early to tell though! My insurance company doesnt want to help though im sure i can persuade them if needed! The motor seems unscathed though will do all the appropriate tests once its out! If it is damaged i may need to do an additional claim! Its a pretty tough motor so hopefully its fine! Im unsure whether to quote all the damage individually through custom repairers which will insure full compensation! ??? what u guys think?

General_Failure - June 6th, 2005 at 07:56 PM

I have no idea when the last post on this was, but I'll say this. Get the rotten mongrels!!!

My 74 camper got shifted from QLD to melb In a shipping container with all our stuff. They must have treated the container rough. There was (and still is) some pretty nasty damage to the van. It wasn't a looker anyway, but I'm still upset nonetheless.

fozee - June 9th, 2005 at 05:48 PM

My R1 was just moved by Trans International and they smashed up the bottom left hand fairing.
When the delivery guy opened up the crate i found it leaning on its side!!:cry

bajachris88 - June 9th, 2005 at 06:07 PM

Shit! Dam I feel for you guys. Stupid bastards, of course there responsible for such damage. By the sound of it, I bet if your kombi came back as metal dust, they would still blame it on "wearing".

If they did it, then they are responsible. Therefore, they should pay for it. Hope you scrounge up enough evidence man. Would you need before and after photos?

PrettyBlueBug - September 15th, 2005 at 03:27 PM

Has anything progressed with this? I just read it and it's an appalling thing to have happen!! :(
I'd rather putt along freeways state to state rather than trust a freight company now!

Schmoburger - December 20th, 2005 at 12:25 AM

ditto!... Wouldnt let another soul touch my bus. :td:

Sirry to hear about ya split, Viking... threaten legal action on there sorry asses...keep the bastards honest! :beer

If they advertise as a bloody automotive transport specialist, then Im sure that they are obligated to pay for the cost assosiated with any damage incurred whilst the vehicle is in there custody... whether it be a dinged door or the total destruction of the vehicle!:cussing

ColumBUS - December 20th, 2005 at 07:57 AM

vikingv8vw hasnt been an active member for a long time... this is the last i heard of it

h - December 20th, 2005 at 01:40 PM

OMG what a horror story..
so what was the outcome..
anyone in the kno?

Schmoburger - December 20th, 2005 at 09:31 PM

Yeah.., sorry for digging up an inactive thread like that ( I didnt read the date)... Though, I too would still like to find out if the bastards who killed his bus got away scot-free or were actually brought to justice...

On a sidenote... I just waved goodbye to my Mini Moke of six years as she took off on the back of a Yenorra-bound tilt-tray, the beginning of a long journey to her new owners in Toowoomba inside a crate... I hope she doesnt get killed by freight handlers on the way :jesus

the bus was destroyed when some knob put a v8 in a deluxe splitty anyway.

twoguns - December 21st, 2005 at 05:40 PM

from all accounts. i still reckon the dude was jsut as at fault as the trucking company.

maybe his pc snuffed it due overuse of the exclamation point!!

Schmoburger - December 24th, 2005 at 11:59 PM

Maybe his bus snuffed it due to overuse of the exclamation point in the direction of the truck driver... ;)

Regardless tho, destroying a bus is intolerable.. even if the bus is some awful bastardisation with a V8.
