Firstly--
at a Guess... I'm hoping its just the points closing....
the points are wearing down all the time...
without tune ups they eventually close...
and the engine stops...

the engine will play up before it actually stops... [usually]

Maybe a tune up is all it needs...
to get you going...
a points file is about $1-00 to clean the points up, but You will need some kind hearted person to adjust and time the points for You...
with a strobe timing lamp and maybe adjust the carby too....
at least check the autochoke is connected and switching off when hot...

Smell of burning oil....
Many VWs smell of burning oil.... at times...
Many [most] Vw engines leak oil....
onto the exhaust, and You have the smell....

Here's hoping all the Above is true....

Cheers

If You were near Scone....

I would have done all the above....

even in the Rain.....

Best of Luck

sounds like points to me as lee said.

also check your fuel filter. replace it. only a buck.fifty

points should havea gap of .016"

google "rob and daves VW" and find that very useful site that give you instructions for everything including tuning your carby.

change your oil if u are worried (wouldnt hurt anyway)

adjust your clutch so u have a couple of centimetres of play in the pedal and start her up and see how u go.
