How to get the chatroom working (mainly XP folks)
vanderaj - June 4th, 2003 at 01:20 AM

If you can't get into the chatroom cos it says you don't have a Java enabled browser, you have several options:

If you're using XP with all the latest patches, you need to go here:

http://java.sun.com/getjava/

Now, the automatic one didn't work for me and Colin, so try this link:

http://java.sun.com/getjava/manual.html

Alternatives include:

Firefox -
http://www.getfirefox.com/

Mozilla -
http://www.mozilla.org/

Opera -
http://www.opera.com/

All of these browsers are multi-platform and are Java capable (although you might to download one of the bigger packages).

If it still doesn't work, you must be able to talk directly out on port 4000 or 6667 (IRC) and you must be able to run embedded Java applets on web pages (try some of Sun's demos to check).

If you're behind a firewall, the port is not likely to be open. I'm sorry, but there is nothing we can do to fix this.

Thanks for the info Andrew.
Showing my lack of knowledge a little, but are they useful for XP if I have NO updates or patches?
I have loaded all of them at work, and get into the chat room fine, but have not (and don't plan to) load any at home.

You should always patch your operating system, no matter which one you use.

It's just that Microsoft and Sun have been busy suing each other and this has forced MS to stop distributing a Java runtime.

So the only way to use Java applets on a fresh XP install now is to install the Sun VM.

Cheers Andrew,

The other thing I noticed is that by default McAfee virus protection version 8.0 prevents inbound and outbound IRC communication. I added "Firefox.exe" to the list of permitted outbound IRC programs, and the chatroom worked for me again.

If you're using McAfee 8.0, you'll need to add your browser or chat program to the list of permitted outbound IRC programs.

Hey,

I can't get into chat. I have java installed and have checked it with the website which says it is working.

I am runnng XP. When I click on chat it shows the java logo with the flashing ring going around it.

Any ideas how to get it going would be appreciated..
