body off newbie
nedsta - February 18th, 2013 at 06:19 PM

Hey guys I have a L series beetle I'm taking the body off. I'm doing it with the motor still in which seems to be a pain in the ass. I've undone all the items needed I need to know is there some sneeky bolts attaching the motor to body for stability or anything cause when I jack the body up in the back the motor comes up with it. Any help would be great I think I've bitten off more than I can chew.:'(

I have never taken the body of an L bug before but the only thing I can think of is to make sure you have disconnected the the accelerator cable and taken off all the wiring, removed any dual carbs that may catch etc.

Ye all that's been disconnected heater controls, starter cable, all the heater tubes. Everything I can think of but still won't release the body. So weird should I get a crowbar in there maybe cause its never been seperated before.

Another thought, you have to take off the main tinware as well as it can catch. Other than that, there are the bolts where the body meets the pan at the shockies and another lot of bolts under the rear seat area as well.

Hmm the bolts at shocks are undone and so are the ones under the back seats hmmm dunno

Check under the back seat, sometimes the bolts are there, sometimes they are not.
Dont use a crow bar, you'll only bend stuff.
Check around where they join incase someone has done some stupid welding in the past

do you mean the top of the rear shock mount to the body??

Yes those bolts have been undone. The body will seperate but its definitely around the motor that's holding it.

Might be the tin in front of the shroud. That must be connected

Every time I have lifted a body the donk is out.

Is the tinware still on the engine ? If the engine bay seal is still ok, this will catch on both sides of the engine (by th park plugs) and also around the front (around the crank pulley).

I wouldn't think this would stop the body coming off though.... You will just bend the tin....

Ye its weird everything I've read doesn't mention the problem I'm having ill just rip all tin ware off see how it goes.

There are bolts at the shock towers (on either side), bolts down from the shock towers above the torsion tube from the start of the shock tower into the body, These are accessed inside the car, far right and left under back seat.

Then under the back seat there are 6? or so on the angle at the back of the floor pan for either side.

Assuming the L bug pan is similar to its 1500cc counterpart.

Did you disconnect the cables from the starter motor?

nedsta - February 19th, 2013 at 12:07 PM

Ye its been disconnected
