1968 Beetle Engine Bay
hulbyw - September 26th, 2020 at 09:21 PM

Can anyone tell me if the 1968 Beetle engine bay tapers in towards the rear of the car or are the sides (where the engine seal fits) parallel?
Cheers.............Wayne

Excellent. That means I got it right when I used a scissor jack to make the engine seal mounting flanges parallel (moved them out around 30mm!)

Are you fitting a bigger capacity engine ???

Yes I am, but even with the stock engine, getting the rocker covers off was a challenge and the engine seal had a small gap in the left rear corner. Reckon my car has had a few whacks both ends early in it's life (prior to my ownership) that were repaired by folks who had little knowledge of VW's or didn't care.

hulbyvw in the local manufacture of workshop tools there is one for the reshaping of the engine bay.

Thanks grumble, I didn't think to look at the workshop tools. Tool #701 is the one I think you are referring to. It's dimensions are 733mm wide. My engine bay now measures 735mm wide after the "jacking" so I am quite happy with that. Thanks again
