Disk brakes
IN THE WEEDS - March 28th, 2015 at 02:50 PM

Where is the best place in sydney to purchase front and rear disk brakes for my 64 beetle.

rickp - March 28th, 2015 at 03:01 PM

you can try your luck with classic at rydalmere... but only if you drive there, and hes open, and he has them in stock. dont wait the famous 2 weeks for him to get them in... because you could be waiting a lifetime

Vollks will have them on the website and will most likely get them delivered to you in about 2 days. Vollks.com.au

newghia - March 28th, 2015 at 03:15 PM

Or order off Cip1, they are pretty quick with their deliveries

vw54 - March 28th, 2015 at 07:53 PM

DON T buy EMPI brand nothing but trouble

landfall - March 29th, 2015 at 07:53 AM

Fitted EMPI rear discs to mine recently, easiest job I have ever done.

Everything fitted without a hitch and they work as they should.

Biggest problem I had was bleeding them, in the end I made a pressure bleeder using a Hills garden spray unit with a small pressure gauge screwed into the top, 8psi and before I knew it had a pedal equivalent to my modern VW.

This continuous EMPI bashing gets a bit monotonous, while some of there products may not be that great, bashing the complete product range and brand is like saying all footballers are criminals and drug takers, etc.

vwo60 - March 29th, 2015 at 01:31 PM

A lot of Empi products are just rebadged parts made by many manufacturers, I have found some of there gear very well made and other parts junk, another consideration would be engineering the brakes to comply, a lot of brakes bought into Australia will never comply because they do not use propiority parts that were complied in Australia originally or the importer never bothered to have them complied leaving the purchaser to do this at there expense. Give due consideration to have a set that are legal in this country so you can insure and register your car legally.

LUFTMEISTER - March 29th, 2015 at 04:25 PM

Seems overseas brakes don't work properly in Australia!!!, even though hundreds of these kits are sold all over this planet, with out any issues OR it could be a closed shop insurance /engineers cash cow being milked for all its worth. You decide my friend. My2c

IN THE WEEDS - March 29th, 2015 at 04:52 PM

Has anyone used the brakes from classicveedub or vollks. What are your thoughts on these are they worth the money

adlbeetle66 - March 29th, 2015 at 06:26 PM

Have heard some bad reports from Volksconversions, and vollks are EMPI.

PAZZAN - March 29th, 2015 at 06:42 PM

I have empi on the back of my sharpbuilt buggy 3 years no problems and passed by my engineer:tu:

grinderman - March 29th, 2015 at 07:16 PM

Have volksconversions front disc brake kit on my 69 bay and it has transformed the braking and will get a rear kit one day as well.

karmann141 - March 29th, 2015 at 09:49 PM

I know this is off topic - Barls can you please explain rules on naming and shaming one supplier and not another.

barls - March 29th, 2015 at 10:03 PM

ive removed my post thanks for reminding me. drunken moment
if anyone want to know of my personal experience with volkconversions pm me.

vwo60 - March 30th, 2015 at 06:42 AM

The buck stops with the owner of the vehicle as far as its legality, Liftmiester the purpose of the engineering is to ensure the vehicle is safe so you do not injure of kill other road user's or yourself. This allow 's you register your car legally so you can also insure it, If you are happy to drive a car that is non engineered then the owner of the vehicle will have to wear the outcome if there is an accident, Just like the guy in Perth who killed his child and is now in Jail. I will await the usual responses.

barls - March 30th, 2015 at 08:05 AM

lets keep this on topic and not take this in to a legality discussion again.

LUFTMEISTER - March 30th, 2015 at 09:00 AM

Usual rubbish example used to back up his argument. The guy in jailed welded 2 moving parts together, he was a knob and justice was forthcoming. He did not fit a part from overseas supplier that is in safe use around the world by other vw enthusiasts. The ADR is a closed shop tax on motor enthusiasts in this country, eagerly supported by the vehicle manufactures, engineers & the insurance industry. It will get to point were you will not be able to fit ANY parts to a car unless it comes from the cars manufacturer thanks to these lobby groups and lay down people who support them. They are just boiling the frog & you just don't know it. My2c

barls - March 30th, 2015 at 01:42 PM

thats enough anymore on the legalities and ill delete the posts. its off topic and I'm not letting you both turn this one in to another shit slinging match.

adlbeetle66 - March 30th, 2015 at 03:49 PM

So Chris, did you get your answer?

IN THE WEEDS - March 30th, 2015 at 05:17 PM

Lol. Are you able to register your car with the classic vee dub ones. Or would it have to be engineered and if so is it possible with these particular brakes

barls - March 30th, 2015 at 05:51 PM

you need to speak to the engineer and see if he's happy sign off on it.
it will need to be engineered under the new laws.

IN THE WEEDS - March 30th, 2015 at 06:06 PM

Ok so who knows an engineer in sydney

I've also had a good run with Volksconversions rear discs, theyve been on my car for over 100,000kms, my yearly pink slip brake test results are on a par with my modern cars and engineering wasnt a hassle as its just OEM Porsche 914 discs and Fiat Spider Calipers.

On the subject of Empi discs though this happened to a set on a guys bug a few days ago on one of the facebook groups I'm on.

vduboy - April 1st, 2015 at 10:59 AM

I've got the Empi ones on the back of my buggy, they are the ones that use the heavier cast bracket and the Ford Taurus calipers, think they are a Varga brand, they passed the brake test well, in fact I had to fit a proportioning valve as they locked up just before the fronts.
I have used the Shermann kit before and the pads were always a loose fit in the bracket and gave a really annoying click click noise when the wheel was spun. Both kits have lousy handbrake cables, will be getting stronger ones made when they break, Also in both kits the cables were too long.
Have you looked into Todd's Subabrakes? He does all sorts of stud patterns too. Wish i'd have gone down that path would have made wheel selection a lot easier.

Does he do the design work foer Empi?

Joel - April 2nd, 2015 at 09:30 AM

Empi fronts are usually fine as they just use Varga discs and calipers, just replace the shitty chinese bearings they supply with the kit and you're laughing.

He was just driving and reckons they cant handle any torque more than a stock engine.
