Subaru engine conversion

When you do the swap-what is everybody doing for exhaust systems?Do you use the Suby front pipes and build onto that,or fabricate everything new from the exhaust flanges on the cylinder heads?I need to build a chassis under the engine,so am guessing I need to leave plenty of room for the head pipes.

Thanks for that.He has the sumps as well.I bought my Type4 Porsche fan shroud from him years ago.

The better N/A exhausts are custom from the heads on. Based upon known type 1 or better yet, type 4 designs for bug or bus or whatever.

This is the approach that some of the off road guys have been using up this way, found that they getting less cracking using this method.

You can also cut back the original headers to gain clearance.

Thanks Brent-what are those elbows you show there-look like steam pipe stuff. Can you mig the stuff or have to tig it?I don't have any OG front pipes yet-it's all still in the donor car.I was offered a complete front pipe set up and knocked it back-bad move.I thought I would run them both forward, then join into 1 pipe under the bellhousing, then put a muffler alongside a rocker cover and bring it out the back or behind one wheel. All my stuff for the car arrived today from the US.The air bag kit is really good quality, but the fitting instructions are really vague.I will have to alter the whole set up for the rears anyway-so it will be a trial and error set up.

Not sure where the elbows come from as that is Adam Pohlman's work. But I think his said he go them from the local steel supplier, sort of thing you would see used on hand rails. The cut back original header is my work.

Adam used a MIG but you could use TIG.

Ok- I reckon I can now remember seeing elbows like that once when I was in Metalands store- on to it, thanks.

If i remember correctly the early turbo cars had a cast exhaust/header set up ,
They were very short and the cross over pipe bolted to them.
They were on the heavy side

New question-what is the go for the alternator adjustment when fitted to a VW, and don't use the power steering pump?Is there something Subaru to act as an idler pulley?

You nailed it there.Pipe bends must be a bit hard to come by.

Just use a shorter belt, 5PK690 should do it. Alternator adjustment is where the alternator mounts to the power steering bracket. So you need to keep the bracket.

Thanks- how embarrassing- that would be the dumbest question I have ever asked. Can't believe I didn't see it- you saved me time chasing the correct belt though
