IRS gearbox conversion
Emmett61bug - August 11th, 2017 at 12:30 PM

I'm in the process of doing a manual IRS trans swap on my 1969 semi auto beetle. I'm having trouble locating a genuine beetle irs gearbox but I am finding plenty of kombi transmissions. I'm looking at a 002 3 rib bus trans, my questions are:
Is this a bolt in fit?
Does it need modification to fit, if so how much?
Is it realitive easy to put the trans in?

002 Trans in a bug is possible but not easy. Usually fitted in Baja Bugs with body lift kits to get clearance. And you need to make mounts to attach it. Plenty of Beetle IRS boxes around. Much easier as it will bolt in. Don't forget you'll need to fit a clutch tube as well.

it's not a bolt in fit, unless you have the right bits to change gear selector to that of a beetle setup.
You'd need a bus to bug conversion kit such as the berg kit, or LanD for starters...

Unless you are planning on big horsepower, or giving the box some abuse, keep looking for a beetle box, they are out there :)

Emmett, where are you located? I have an IRS box here in Kalgoorlie.
