ive got silvia seats in my 72. so they can be fitted. they do require an engineers certificate though to be legal.
most people use ether honda prelude or something similar.

no any seat other than stock requires an engineers certificate.
you dont have to get the engineers but if you have an accident and the insurer finds them they will just wipe your insurance.

anything other than vw you will need engineers cert........not too hard, just consult an engineer and do as they ask so they comply from the get go

You can add all kinds of seats with adaptors. Take a look at aftermarket brands like Recaro. Trust me, you'll never look back and wonder why it took you so long to make the change.

The best thing to do is to get newer seats. I got some out of a suzuki swif.

Have a look on here and pm or call ian or rose as they have a shop in rutherford and they will know hopefully wheater there is a good engineer in the area to get the new seats done. They will last ages. Ive seen recaros and excel seats as well as the ones mentioned above. Also seen bmw seats in one. Check out the samba too.

The most important thing before you buy any seats is do some measuring.
VW seats are fairly narrow and alot of people that adapt mainstream seats end up with seats that touch the doors when shut or touch each other in the middle making handbrake access awkward
soemthing that an engineer would not pass

i ended up with gen5 celica seats in mine, same width as vw seats and so nice and comfy for long trips

drivers seat has so many adjustments it makes my brain hurt but best of all i dont slide out of them under hard cornering

When i bought my baja it had racing seats and NO leg room in rear. I fitted some daihatsu charade G11 seats. reasonable comfortable but could be better, I am 6 foot and about 110kg, so would prob be more comfortable for someone smaller. Just had to remove the cahrade runners and weld mounting brackets to the VW seat rails. They are a little bit wider than VW seats but don't touch doors or each other, and I got some leg room back.
