1968 Beetle Fuel Flap Issues
mickya - June 6th, 2012 at 09:29 AM

Okay, im confused as shit.

My old 68 donor car had the fuel flap with the lever under the dash, however my body that i had painted doesnt have holes or anything like that.

I believe my options are drill for the lever, or get on of those latching springs, however i have no idea where i could get one from.

Advice?

Your donor wasn't a 68, the cable release was 69-72.

I think the 68 body like yours is lacking the mounts for the latching system.
Best bet is find a 68 spring loaded flap and get it painted.

You may be able to uncrimp the holder and put a 68 spring on there so it stays shut but I'd be worried about damaging your paint.

Yes the 1968 and the 1976 NON Supers just had the finger indent to open the fuel flap..
the 1969 had the pull cable which means Your fuel flap wants to stay open...
because of the spring...
I'll have a look at My spring to see what its like...

as Joel says, You can change the complete door but unless You get it chromed.. lol, it will be a different colour.. lol

the centre piece of My spring is held off the lid with the tab sticking out about 15mm approx which isn't really adjustable or moveable
so, where Your tab in the centre of the spring lays flat mine sticks out...
so, even the spring may be the same...?

allowing the flap/door to spring closed when its partially closed..

Cheers guys, got a mate with a clever vw dad, going to take it to him and see what we can do about it. He has one of the springs i need at least..

I believe th springs are the same, its just how the centre of the spring is located

Yours is close to the door/flap so the spring is pushing the door/flap open all the time..

Mine- the spring centre is located off the door/flap 15mm

so. the spring only closes the door when its half closed...

Maybe some araldite epoxy may hold the spring centre...
or take the spring off...
don't forget all fuel flaps are not the same size either...
or get the correct door with the fuel cap etc..and have it fitted and painted..

the problem being is how the middle of the spring is located...
and its not adjustable...
