ej22 or bigger into split help needed,

Hi there veedubbers well im looking into well going to more like it subi the 64 split I have restored, was thinking the ej22 and subi box but any ideas on going a 6 cylinder can you get off the self conversion parts or a turbo even, pros and cons price difference also wont be doing my self as have no time at the moment rather just pay and have it done properly and quickly and be reliable turn the key and spin the wheels :cool: , can anyone direct me to a few threads on this , I have been searching here and on google but getting more confused,

have a look at Joels thread as he is running a non turbo subi and has a lot of technical stuff in it. there is also a bit of info on the subigears web site as well.

I would think a 2.2 in a splittie would be heaps of power for general day to day use. No turbo means less heat and easier instal.

Did our bus 8 years ago, with EJ22, and have done 100's of conversions in other cars of all sorts. From stretch limo to V8's, superchargers, turbo 4's and 6's. I love modifications.

thanks a lot lou looking at the posts now and hell bus will send you a pm, didn't think of the heat thing ej22 it is, cheers for the advice havnt been on here for a while but years ago I got a lot of information and learnt so much about the beloved vws from this site , keep up the good work I just put a ship mate from work onto this site and have steered a few others new to the scene in the past here and have been thanked for that so well done and keep up the good work

The EJ22 are getting a bit dated these days and could require a full engine rebuild (costly)
I used a EJ25 SOHC out of an 02 forester(also used in early outbacks and libertys) because they have more low end torque and are narrower across the tappet covers that the later EJ25 DOHC motors.
By Baja drives so smooth n quiet even with my very short exhaust. - highly recommend it.
As for gearbox I used a tough offroad spec 2ltr kombi box but for a road going kombi like yours those SUBIGEARS converted n rebuilt 5spd boxes would be a fantastic reliable way to go.

You would be surprised actually.

As long as you get an engine that doesn't have anything major wrong with it a rebuild is surprisingly cheap especially compared to rebuilding a VW engine.

Only Genuine Subi parts were used in the rebuild of my EJ25 and it still came out under $2k.
Get one that's been overheated, run low on oil etc I'm sure it would be a lot more costly to rebuild.



But yes a good EJ22 if you can find one if not a modern EJ20 or EJ25 would go well.

The 6s are nice engines but that much power and torque in a split takes a lot of brake, suspension and wheel upgrade to be safe.
An EJ25 is nearly triple a 1600 VW in HP, that is plenty for most people.

I assume you mean factory crate engines not reco ones?
