CV maximum operating angles
Craig Torrens - January 15th, 2004 at 10:04 PM

Beetle = 12 deg
Bus= 17 deg
Porsche 924/944/181= 23 deg
Porsche 930= 25deg

Bus and 924/944/181 are also interchangeable

does this sound right ?

vw54 - January 15th, 2004 at 10:12 PM

Depends on the Accummine

So did you buy the Kombi modified stub axles ???

Craig Torrens - January 15th, 2004 at 10:34 PM

on the turps again dave :D

No, did not buy.
will still need to get them done, but probably will use a local engineering shop:thumb unless the price is right for the others ;) and they're ceramic coated:D:D

I now have a good 1800 Kombi box, now doing the research on the CV's.

I think you will find it safest to run either the bus and porsche 924/944/181 to a maximum of 17 degrees. You need to ensure you got the right CV before trying to run 22 degrees.

you might find this link interesting, will help positively ID the joints.
http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_to/CVJoints_Axles/cv_joints_101.htm

and this one
http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_to/CVJoints_Axles/axles_101.htm
but I think where it says type 2 and 4 are interchangable cos they are both 28mm should be 34mm.

Craig Torrens - January 16th, 2004 at 08:24 PM

Thanks Wes, already checked out the sites :thumb just wanted to confirm their findings:D

I will use the 924/944 CV's for the extra angles, probably buy new so they are the right ones, but will use the measurements as supplied to check.

Andy42 - January 16th, 2004 at 11:10 PM

So where will you buy these new items from and how much are they??? just curious as i might want to go that way myself

Craig Torrens - January 17th, 2004 at 09:17 AM

Will let you know, cost is about $100 per CV new.

I think this is the way to go :thumb

Andy42 - January 18th, 2004 at 09:53 PM

This guy has a fair amount of gear for CVs
I have gotten a shifter from hime before with no problems. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33729&a...

Currently reading Jeff Hibbards BajaBugs and Buggies. About a third of it is devoted to suspension setups and about two pages on CV options. A good read.

I think I feel more confused after reading it as there is so much that can be done.

Andy42 - January 19th, 2004 at 07:35 PM

Just got a quote for a complete brand new 930 set up to suit my buggy and it came in a $700 US. Ouch do not think I will bother going with those:(

Craig Torrens - January 19th, 2004 at 08:17 PM

930 are bigger than 924/944,you need to modify everything to make them fit !

Andy42 - January 19th, 2004 at 08:20 PM

Yeh this kit for the 930s comes with everything needed. At least that was teh price I asked for.

Craig Torrens - January 19th, 2004 at 08:33 PM

probably an over kill for what we want, would be nice though :D

G’day Craig
CV’s the Off Road racer’s nightmare, lol
Yes you can get 23 to 24 deg from 944 CV’s but don’t accelerate at this angle or it all goes south. You will save money in the long run going to 930 CV’s. Books like Jeff Hibbard’s Baja Bugs & buggies (published in the mid 80’s) are top books for playing, but when it comes to horsepower and racing it doesn’t stop there. To use 25 deg on our Racecar we need 930 CV’s, 4130 CV Boot Flanges, 4130 CV cages and we also use a CV polish bit to clearance new 930 CV’s. Ok this is Off Road racing and not black track but we don’t have the neck-snapping traction in the dirt.
Some Prices from Australian suppliers if it helps:
930CV from $130
Gearbox output flanges & axle flanges exchange $70ea
Chromoly cages from $100
Chromoly Boot flanges $45ea (a must)

Regard’s
Moose

hotdog008 - March 5th, 2004 at 12:45 PM

with 930`s won`t you need new axles too! more dollars.

reub - March 5th, 2004 at 09:15 PM

Guess I'm lucky this was done. Modified type 3 drive flanges, 930 cv's, romac billet axles. Should hold up to the subie.

Yes axles as well. (Didn't think of that because I modify them to 650mm long anyway

Quote:
The CV’s are also recognised as a weak link. Kombi CV’s can be used successfully if you don’t have huge amounts of travel in the rear, but almost everyone runs Porsche CVs. We actually run 7 series BMW CVs as they are the same size, shape and are almost as good as the Porsche ones at a cheaper price. We’ve had no problems with ours at all. A little bit of linishing and some specialised offroad cages and you’re on your way

Sounds like it could be a good option. Anybody here know any more on this?

I will possibly try to get some prices today.

Craig Torrens - April 14th, 2004 at 03:43 PM

they are the same as the 930 porsche CV which is bigger again in size than the 924/944/kombi CV........................big dollars for gearbox flanges and axles and stub axles

so I'm told !:jesus

Andy42 - April 14th, 2004 at 05:05 PM

yep just over $700US for CVs, boots, drive flanges, and stub axels.. without shipping costs.
