australia day getaway
rocknrob - January 26th, 2009 at 07:14 PM

OK strictly speaking this is not offroad...there was always some kind of track....

My new years res was to getaway in the kombi once a month....

so I headed for the main range in qld...most familiar as cunningham gap...but i wanted to really getaway from it all so i chose emu creek

and this is what it looked like...so i waded in...kneedeep...hmm...do i quit and go home?...nahhh...

so i get to the very end of the road...another 4 scary crossings...and it was getting late...so i camped...

what a great place away from it all...and i had food drink and music...rained steady thru the night but i was comfy in my queen size bed

next morning woke up and noticed a little track heading up the hill...so took a little hike and got some great views

came back down and had a late breakfast then decided to head home thru the condamine gorge...4WD city! and i think they were all a little peeved that my kombi could go places their $70,000 patrols could go...creek crossings...i lost count but some were very picture skew

next stop teviot gap...weather closed in...the two white streaks are teviot falls...whiteout...

at elevation over 1000m very narrow winding road down...lucky i got 4Wdiscs and big ventilated fronts...

so made it home safe...start planning next months adventure:cool:

That looks like a great weekend trip, how did you find out about it, or did you just get up and go exploring? I'm jealous, you're out there doing this sort of thing whereas people like me keep saying one day.

rocknrob - January 26th, 2009 at 08:54 PM

I had to make a new years res...otherwise i'd keep saying "one day"...i just found that road and went exploring....theres plenty more!

Great little trip! Sometimes those places are really nice in the rainy weather.

looks like a good trip, i wouldnt mind doing that in my kombi as well

rocknrob - January 30th, 2009 at 05:33 PM

yeah everytime i take my kombi bush I'm amazed it makes it home...it goes everywhere i want:tu: still havn't been on the beach but i want to rustproof it before i do that:starhit:

Baja Wes - January 30th, 2009 at 10:39 PM

I prefer the bush to the beach. I find the beach pretty boring to be honest. I think I've been there too many times.

rocknrob - January 30th, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Well yeah i can imagine what you are saying Wes...like that last trip i just wanted to explore and go where the track took me and i found some amazing places...going back for more!

Baja Wes - January 31st, 2009 at 09:15 AM

Yeah. The thing with the beach is the first km is fun because it's quite different to the road. But then you realise the next 60km of beach look exactly the same as the first km. So it's like driving on a highway made of out sand.

I prefer exploring national parks and bush tracks because you don't know what your going to find. You've got the border ranges national park near you which is a nice place to go. There's a heap of dirt roads heading out toward Queen Mary Falls on the border there too.
