keeping the patina on my rat.
type3vw - June 30th, 2012 at 05:16 PM

hey all i recently bought myself a rat bug, and i will be turning it into
a car i want to use most days of the week. now i want to be able to
preserve how it looks and dont want it to get any worse. i am going
to use ankor wax but i have a few questions regarding it so here i go

1, how do get the rust smooth without going back to the metal?
2, its says its best to spray it on or brush it on, can i spray it on from
a water spray bottle? or any other ways of putting it on.
3, how often does it need to be re applyed if i drive it nearly every
day?
4, im open to any tips or suggestions regarding the bug.

thanks ben

Man thats some nice aging there! I was asking the same thing for my bug and i will probably use penatrol just cheaper than ankor wax. I'll just brush it on.

i love how well its aged, i dont want to change a thing. whats this
penetrol stuff? how long does it last? where do you get it from?
cheers

We use Ankor Wax on El Concreto. You will need to make sure the body is clean and dry, paint it on with a brush and then rub it back with a rag.

Penetrol you can get from bunnings cost like $25 does the same thing as ankor wax.

Ive used both, penetrol stops rust full stop, it works... but it stains the paint and is very difficult to remove... its good for areas where its not seen, like fish oil etc...

Ive used ankor wax on my bus now and my old 57, its expensive but also works, benefit is it doesnt stain and can be removed... it is easy to apply, as ash said, brush on and wipe off, rub in...

Both need reapplying once a year, maybe more if outside all the time...

The penetrol dries hard but will stain, ankor wax seems to go hard but my experience is it softens up in the sun which is ok but a bit inconvenient. Although it stops people touching the bus.

Im sold on the ankor wax, worth the money and when hot, it must get into all the places it needs to go, and smells good...

Ive got a very ratty car, and i live not far from the beach and am always parked at the beach and it hasnt rusted a bit...

Just beware that penetrol does stain, another alternative is lanolin, although havent used in years...

Thanks to everyone for the reply's. Much appreciated.
Do I have to rub the surface rust at all or just clean it?

MISS VDUB - July 1st, 2012 at 09:55 AM

Ankor Wax is the best investment long term in my opinion. 100% agree with Bruce's comments.

I get mine from Al at Das Resto Parts on the Gold Coast but Brad at Bus n Bug should be selling it still also.

Another cheap way to protect it is Canola cooking spray ..We use it at work to protect all our cages and fabricated parts until they get painted and on our 4wd buggy which is all bare metal works unreal as an anti spatter spray for welding as well.

I remember seeing this on ebay! I wish I could've bought it, it looks so good!!

i used this stuff called rust masters, applied it with a rag to the whole car. worked so well $25 for 500ml. gave it a dull shine and made the patina stand out a treat

Ankor wax has worked well for me although I had a better result with rolling it on with a small foam roller than brushing it on, especially on big flat panels.
