Round 1 NSW Hillclimb Championship race report 3rd vid added
colin - February 2nd, 2013 at 04:04 PM

On the 9-10/2/2013 Kempsey Sporting Car Club will host round 1 of the NSW Hillclimb Championship.
The track is located at Cooperabung approx 5k,s north of Telegraph Point, and is allways sign posted.
I believe i will be the only VW competing at this event as GT has a caravan and Camping show to attend. Nathan has family and new home committments, and Heath is still finishing of his new engine. Not sure how Greg Ward is going.
I will be trying to get some incar footage with my new GoPro camera so cross fingers i get the camera sorted for some footage.
Due to the lack of expose to any print media, i will also post a full race report with results etc both with this event and all the other rounds throughout the year.

Cheers Col

Cool - have fun with it Col !!!

:tu:

Was thinking about doing Cooperbung but it clashes with event at Mt Cotton, so might see you at the Bathurst rounds instead....

Damn Col, only a few days ago I agreed to run a safety boat at the Arrow Catamaran State sailing titles at Queens Lake that weekend.

I might see if I can get out of the Sunday and come & see how you go.

Craig Torrens - February 3rd, 2013 at 10:02 AM

I'd be disappointed if you didn't set a new class record ;)

cnfabo - February 5th, 2013 at 06:31 AM

Go smash em col. Remember to press the the record button on, oh and off, the latter I happen to do a lot!!!

Craig Torrens - February 11th, 2013 at 09:13 AM

So did you set a new record Colin ?

bat69 - February 11th, 2013 at 09:49 AM

Yes he did but it also got broken two other times by two different drivers in their respective cars. One was a gemini and the other dato. Both of those drivers are former state imp pro champs. From all reports it sounded like competition was very close at the pointy end. Col should chim in soon with details. Congrates Col on an excellent result on your first outing with your new engine combo.

Craig Torrens - February 11th, 2013 at 10:51 AM

Thanks for the update......looking forward to seeing the footage and results.

vassy66T1 - February 11th, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Sounds like a good round :)

PAZZAN - February 11th, 2013 at 06:55 PM

who where the drivers of the gemini & datto, might know them

bat69 - February 11th, 2013 at 07:08 PM

Ashley Birks in the gemini. Ash was a former state imp pro circuit champ in his gemini. He has been racing the gemi on the track for a number of years. Paul you prob would have race against him at some stage in the beetle. The dato driver was Aaron Osborn in a 1200. He has been multi state and Australian under 1600 imp pro hillclimb champ before turboing the dato and moving up a class. Aaron was last years state champ in the imp pro 1601 to 2000 class too.

Whoa was the competition fast and furious at the first round of the NSW championship at Cooperabung.
After a 4 hour tow on Saturday morning i unpacked the car and had a quick bite of lunch in the pits. Practice was on so i took advantage and had 2 runs to get a feel with the new engine. First inpressions was really good power delivery and lots more torque and pull through the gears, big smiles on saturday evening.
Sunday morning was warm to start with, and a local told me it was going to get hot fairly early on with a chance of a storm later. 6 cars were entered in my class, the most popular and competitve by far. Aaron in his 1200 Datto turbo, Adrian, Datto 1600, Ashley Birks, Gemini fastback with a 220 bhp atw apollo, bottom end, toyota double overhead cam 11000rpm missile. (not sure how this car falls within the rules:), New young dude in another Gemini with the same 11000rpm missile motor, a Renault Clio, and finally yours truly in a old Beetle!:tu:
Straight away times were fast and the track record was broken many times (record 29.35).
Ashley and Aaron traded fastest times throughout the day with myself chiming in once, wish it rained after the second run . Eventually brute horsepower was to great, with Ashley taking the class win and smashing the old record.

Ashley Birks 28.5
Aaron 28.9
Col 29.2

Can,t remember the others but all slower than the top 3.
Sadly Aaron had a big accident at the infamous sweeper corner, he was not hurt and walked away from the wreck, but the little 1200 has suffered major damage, and looked from first impressions to be a total loss.
I was very pleased with the cars first outing with my new engine and a big thanks to Dylan and Jeff for popping up and saying hello on the day.
I have some in car Gopro footage to post up in the next couple of days which looks really great.

Cheers Col

cnfabo - February 11th, 2013 at 08:39 PM

Damn col top 3 all so close. Nice write up. What do u rev your engine to now?

Bring on the incar!!!!!!!

Cheers Fabo.....

Craig Torrens - February 11th, 2013 at 09:55 PM

Wow, Ashley slaughted it. It will be interesting to see how they go at Bathurst.

Bummer re Aarons car.

DylanTheDubber - February 11th, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Was a Great day, Enjoyed Seeing all the cars, the people and the drivers themselfs especially Colin being the only beetle there and only VW except for a vw powered shooting buggy.

Proud to see you got in the top 3 in your class Colin, i think you did very well considing the black datto being faster but then crashing was quite sad. Great to hear you got the go pro footage too as i dont think we got much at all pics or vids.

Anything i do have ill put on a disc and send to you again Col.

From Dylan

Why would it not fall within the rules ?

Here is my maiden run with the new motor.
Off course you don,t win on practice day so this was a slow run and a good confidence build with the new engine.
The chicane is tricky so i took it slow to begin with.
Chris i had the shift light set at 7200rpm and the limiter at 7500rpm, no need to rev the engine any harded, it,s not making power.
More footage to come in the days ahead.

Cheers Col

PS I love my new GoPro, it,s my fav new toy.

vassy66T1 - February 13th, 2013 at 07:50 AM
