R2 & R3 NSW Hillclimb Championship Bathurst 2nd & 3rd March
bat69 - February 17th, 2013 at 01:21 PM

As the name suggest the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the NSW hillclimb championship is on the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd March. Sat is the Esses and Sun Mt Straight. This is a well run event and a worthy one go to to spectate at.

Col, Glen and myself are running in our Beetles. I'm rather excited about this event as it will be the first time I have ran there in 5 years and my first tilt at the state hillclimb series in as many years as well. I am really looking forward to racing against Col, Glen and the others in the class as it will the first time in nearly 8 years Col and I have raced against each other (I cant believe its been that long). All of us will be entered in the imp pro class.

If anyone is thinking of coming down for a look see drop in at the top of the mountain and say hello.

Good luck boys

I've put an entry in too, but a bit concerned about the "90 competitors and 10 reserves" limit.

Do BLCC post up the entrant list reasonably ahead of time ???

I'll swing down for a look regardless, but I'd rather not drag the race car all the way from Brissie if not going to be getting a run !!!

Targeted scruit going to be an interesting time too possibly - none of the clubs I run with in Qld have switched across to it yet...

btw Nathan - when you gonna put Kermit in as your profile pic ???

Dave in the past BLCC have emailed out confirmation letters to all accepted entrants. I have not received mine yet.
Will be awesome to have another Beetle in the pits. :tu:

Cheers Col

Cool guys!!

Bathurst was the first place I saw hillclimb and the first time I saw a beetle with some kahoonas!!!

Happy memories ... and some inspiration for the current day project

bat69 - February 21st, 2013 at 07:09 PM

Due to circumstances out of my control I wont be going now. I withdrew last night. Best of luck and go and kick some backside

Sides - February 22nd, 2013 at 08:52 AM

When I next do Buladelah and take the first corner full pipe in 4th at 7500rpm and someone takes a photo again with the ar$e hangibg out. Just like the current pic.

Its a bummer Im not going as I to was really looking forward to running against the other vw guys. Would have been good to catch up with you Dave too as it has been nearly 6 years since we last raced together. We could have shared some data from the haltechs data logging considering both our cars are similar. With any luck I am hoping to make the trip up this year to Mt Cotton.

Best of luck

Some news lads :)

Sides - March 5th, 2013 at 09:53 AM

News is we all had a perfect weekend's racing... ton of fun, all VW's back onto their trailers nice and straight and with everything working as it should.

I wasn't in the results - so much concrete pretty intimidating, and just not enough courage pills in my race bag... but I had a ton of fun and will definitely be back to take another crack at the place.

Col & GT both did really well - coming away with some silverware and setting themselves up well for rest of the series.

Other than that, its a bloooooody long drive... just shy of 2600km round trip for me, but well and truly worth it. Thanks guys both for the idea to make the trip and the great weekend it turned into.

:D :D :D

I pulled up at the 3rd floodway, water was rushing over the road and it looked a little deeper than the last two i wen,t threw. I was 1.5 hours from home heading across the Breeza plains in weather that i can only decribe as apocalyptic, it was raining as hard as i,ve ever seen rain, ever!. But just when i thought i would have to get out and check the depth a cattle truck came along. Following it through the water i reckon it was roughly 400mm deep, behind the truck. What a start to the weekends racing and it,s only Friday morning.
Saturday was a very windy and cold day, there was zero track temp and a few cars were caught out by the lack of grip in the surface. It looked as though it would pelt down rain any minute.
Team VW racing, consisting of myself and GT had an honered guest with us this weekend, Dave Sidery had brough Jezza down to play. With 7 cars in our class the competition was strong, but above all else we all had a great days racing with smiles and lots of laughs all day, final times were as follows.

Col 2nd in class ftd 29.73 (pb) 15th outright (62entrants)
GT 3rd in class ftd 30.65 19th outright (top drive mate)
Dave 7th in class 33.70 43rd outright.

Sunday dawned even colder if thats possible, and after the drivers briefing it was down the moutain to line up for the daunting and intimidating Mountain Straight Hillclimb. Dave was a little nervous but his first run didn,t show it firing up the hill to set a good first time. I was 2 cars in front of him and when he got out of his car at the pits his face was white!:lol::lol:. he looked at me and said "you guys think this is fun, thats bloody scary". We all laughed hard and long and Dave just got faster and faster as the day went on, carving out 4seconds quicker from slowest to fastest time.:tu:
I unfortunately only had 3 runs as a car overshot the finish line and because there is 2 cars on track at a time and i was following him i got a red flag which means stop immediatley.
Final results are as follows

Col 3rd in class ftd 54.98 (pb) 27th outright (85 entrants)
GT 5th in class ftd 57.20 47th outright
Dave 7th in class ftd 59.95

There was again a number of damaged cars over the course of the weekend but the 3 little Beetles ran perfect all weekend and punched well above there weight. A real good weekend was had bt all. :tu:

I also have some gopro footage and photo,s to post up over the next few days.

Cheers Col

Here is some gopro footage of an early run on Saturday 'The Esses".
The day was so cold and the track surface slippery which is unusual for bathurst which usualy really good.
You will notice the back steps out when i grab 4th near the finish line.

Cheers Col

Nice work boys . Would love to do those hillclimbs.

debiasi4 - March 5th, 2013 at 09:25 PM

Fantastic effort guys. Col your car sounds great. Must be a great track to race on. Would love to come over next year and have a steer.

Dazz - March 5th, 2013 at 09:36 PM

Some great footage guys. This is the type or stuff I am keen to get involved in.

Just did V8 Race.com at Bathurst and it was a daunting track with all those walls and they were a bit sensitive about how early you got on the power. Stupid traction control kept coming in. I have driven cars with diff lock for years, how can you power out of a corner and not get slip with diff lock? Still fun though
