VW's at MG Noosa Hillclimb
Sides - July 5th, 2013 at 09:43 AM

Seems we have 3 VW's regularly hillclimbs and the odd sprint now... me with my Jezebel, Noel and his track-oriented'ish 76 plus the VW Drivers Club's "Drag Fasty".

The MG Noosa Hillclimb last weekend saw 90 cars entered, including some very exotic machinery such as a recent model Lamborghina (Gallardo I think) and a track-ready Viper imported from the US. Unfortunately it rained both days, so the Lambo didn't play for long (best run 77.39 seconds) and the Viper couldn't really stretch it's legs at all (best run 64.21)

We all logged 8 runs, and while none of us claimed any silverware we had no mechanical issues or incidents (well... 1 spin for Noel), and all cars went back onto their trailers, panels straight and everything working. A perfect weekend's racing !!!

Lambo in flight. You could hear the pits go quiet every time it ran... the noise it made screaming up the hill was just gorgeous.

In the looks department our old VW's couldn't really hold a candle to the Lambo, but pitted up close together and a bit of Instagram magic makes them look so puuurrrty !!!

The "Drag Fasty" is an auto with a stock'ish 1600 Type 3 donk (larger on the way), so runs in Improved Production 1301-1600cc. Dave O (stidub) piloting it this time out, and managed a 79.53 second best run up The Hill. 4th in class and 79th overall. Can you tell he was trying ??? (note to self - swaybars should be next on the club's 'to buy' list)

In Jezebel I have a 1915cc donk, and so run in Improved Production 1601-2000cc. My best run of 73.97 got me 4th in clasas and 52nd overall. (yup - I'm a big chicken when it comes to driving on a wet track)

Noel's beetle has a 1904cc engine, and being at the moment more street car than race car he runs in the Road Registered class. His best run of 77.38 got him 7th in class and 71st overall.

And not to be forgotten, being truly VW in spirit there was Tom Hackett in his "Formula Libre" aka VW shooting/dune buggy... 1835cc with twin carbs, BJ beam and Swing axle rear, and basically sweet f*** all weight he was pretty quick... 68.45 seconds for 20th overall.

And this is the video from my quickest run... this was the dryest the track got, as you can probably guess from the rain spots appearing on my windscreen.

I've got some in-car from Noel's Beetle also, but figure I should at least let him see it before posting publicly !!!

;)
