Ferk. That's fast.

Definitely worth watching. The NSW hillclimb championship would be a whole lot more exciting on roads like that.

Thanks for posting it Dave.

Rene has a number of different engine combinations, but not sure what he was running that week end.
I think it was 2165, but he will let me know.

STIDUB - April 28th, 2011 at 09:46 AM

nice, the mentiopn of 5 speed confused till the 2nd video, he only goes for 5th once in both runs right?

dangerous - April 28th, 2011 at 08:17 PM

It is a "China Black" 2387 with wedgeports,
and berg 5 with Albins gears.
Gotta have big balls to go 7000 in 5th so close to the edge of the road near the end of those runs!!.

cnfabo - April 28th, 2011 at 09:18 PM

yeah nuts for sure.he can drive darn good too....would like to know what speed he reached...

do u know what bumbstick and length rods are in the engine dave....

vassy66T1 - April 28th, 2011 at 09:28 PM

"China Black" .. okay, I'll ask.
What is that?

waveman1500 - April 28th, 2011 at 09:40 PM

yeah same...i can see a close 5 like that would benefit even a milder engine...

ttriebler - April 28th, 2011 at 11:04 PM

WOW....MASSIVE balls..........

fastnuf - April 29th, 2011 at 12:02 PM

"The NSW hillclimb championship would be a whole lot more exciting on roads like that."

Definitely not your rinky dink go kart track. There are not too many hillclimb tracks that you get into 4th gear at, let alone 5th.

corvair88 - May 1st, 2011 at 02:03 PM

In answer to a couple of questions re: Mt Alma hill climb.
The motor is all chinese aftermarket.
It has a prepared 86mm $289.00 chevy journal crank,$750.00Mag case,$350.00 94mm Wisco pistons,$259.00 rods,my own cam grind,$735.00 wedgeport heads, 48IDF Carbs bolted to $190.00 manifolds, 12lb 8dowel fly wheel,$48.00 Blackfan housing and tinware, $179.00alternator, $350.00exhaust,$69.00 Black capped distributor with black high tension leads.
Therefore the name China Black.
7000rpm is 116.16mph over the finish line with less than 80meters till dirt, for run off.
This has been a bit of a talking point ,from a drivers point of view ,but the organisers say that it is up to the driver to decide how they finish off
their own run.
There has been quite a few vehicles that have changed shape, both going up the 19 degree hill, and ,after going over the Mt. Alma Mile 1.6km finish line. Rene'

I still remember your Karmann Ghia Rene'... I still remember Mike Petrou and Clinton Faustmann tuning it at DAT Racing.Did any other parts other than the wheels make it onto the bug?.

corvair88 - December 27th, 2012 at 09:08 PM

Hi snitzt
In answer to you question regarding whether any components were saved and made it to the Beetle.
There was a couple of a couple of gears from the gearbox, a couple of wheels and that's it.
The KG burned for 22minutes on the side of the Gorge Road in the Adelaide Classic as it was called then in 1997.
New technologies, new ideas and the Beetle has always done me proud for the last 5 years in hill climbing but my heart is with the KG.
Now I have to dust off and set up the KG for hill climbing.
That's top of the bucket list!

Regards from Rene' in the over regulated Nanny State

snitz - December 27th, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Thanks for the reply Rene..would be awesome to see you back in a KG again..:tu:..but any flat 4 in a tarmac rally or hillclimb makes my day!.
