What are the brackets that will be contested at the VW national's?
66fastback - February 16th, 2004 at 11:26 AM

Does anyone have a list of what the brackets will be at the VW nationals? I saw on the web site that they are still to be listed.
Just considering a trip from Melbourne to race, and I wanted to know what to expect.

Anyone else planning to travel up and race from Vic?

They will be

All VWs

Fastest 8

Others

King of the Hill

I will have all the regulations soon but the main item will be under 95Db with the noise so dont expect to run a stinger.
1 run and if your over the noise limit then your OUT no second chances so be prepared. Even ME !!!

So none of the competition cars will be running then?

I hope not! This rules out virtually every fast vw in the country! Could someone please confirm this?

we're at a drag strip.... aren't we!!!!!!!!

whats the diff between us and other draggers. re the wild bunch.... what !#/*

What about cars with andra logbooks, Are they exempt?

HotRodMatt - February 16th, 2004 at 06:30 PM

Some days the track gets an EPA permit. For some meets it does not.

As the event is essentially an off-street event the EPA permits probably wouldn't be sought.

I don't know about most people, but I would be more than happy just to turn up & do runs all day rather then be concerned about competitions, u could still have the fastest street registered car, thats pretty easy, but I would just prefer to get in as many runs as possible.
The reason that I mention it, is that every year waiting in the line up, thats the main topic of conversation between the drivers is that u don't get enough runs. I remember one year I had 2 runs, then got knocked out first round. Wasn't much fun.
just a thought

A bit more work but maybe an indexed racing session would go a way towards Jak's thoughts.

If there's 200 cars, that's 100 pairs. A few might drop out and a few oil downs will slow things down but it isn't hard to imagine more than 300 passes in a day.

As many runs as possible, fastest time wins:thumb in each class.

What about the Berg trophy ?? Will the rules be posted?

Not that I can run it,being an unregistered vehicle :(

speedster356 - February 16th, 2004 at 10:08 PM

I think if run like the other off street drags at the Creek, then non registered cars may run if they have an ANDRA logbook and also meet the <95db noise limit?

jakriz - February 17th, 2004 at 05:19 AM

it shouldn't make a lick of difference for u craig, u should run regardless, so what if u can't go for a trophy? I want to see u in the 13s:thumb
Heaps of runs would be ideal, then after that, we can go next door & do some laps of the curcuit..........

Craig Torrens - February 17th, 2004 at 06:56 AM

I like your idea Jak :thumb

Gene Berg Trophy Drag Race Rules

The Gene Berg Trophy is a perpetual award, presented to the driver of the FASTEST ROAD REGISTERED VW. As there may be some confusion over exactly what is a "road registered" car, the following rules have been implemented.

1. The vehicle must be registered. That is the chassis and engine numbers must match up with the registration papers, sticker and plates. This can be checked by the scrutineers.

2. The cooling system must be intact. The cylinder tin, fan housing and fan must be fitted, although the fan belt may be removed for a run.

3. The best time only in "racing" will be counted.

4. The vehicle must run on pump petrol, for example leaded super, or standard or hi octane unleaded. No exotic chemistry allowed.

5. Street tyres must be run. No drag slicks are allowed. Road tyres must have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread.

6. Fitting of the rear seat and rear seat belts is optional but both front seats and belts must be fitted.

7. Fibreglass mudguards, bonnets, whale tails and spoilers are allowed, but the body and doors must be factory steel.

8. No perspex windows are allowed, all windows must be glass.

9. The spare wheel must be fitted for safety reasons.

10. Exhaust design is unlimited except that it must meet the track noise requirements.

11. Vehicles for this class must be able to be driven on the street in the normal manner. If scrutineers are in any doubt, you may be required to complete a 15 km drive.

Just a question on rule number 9.

I have not been allowed down the strip in either A.I.R or Calder with a spare wheel in the car. I have been told to remove it for safety reasons.

Is this allowed at WSID?

Should this rule be reviewed?

vw54 - February 18th, 2004 at 05:48 PM

I will check for you Ive always run the drags with spare wheel in the front dont make any difference.

Its an ANDRA sanctioned event so all ANDRA rules apply

I am currently discussing and writing the rules with WSID and will post ASAP

Oh yes the best thing is no noise limit. ( still to be confirmed in writing )
