Aaron Roberts vw Automatic drag type 3 notch 13B TT
20bkombi - May 27th, 2012 at 07:14 PM

Thought i would use some spare parts form the garage to build a BUGGET race car to have some fun.
The idea is to keep the build cost way down and the maintenanece that doesn't exceed the auto's diff gears or case. But i still want to go as fast or faster than my black kombi if i can.

This is some of the stuff from my parts bin.

1 x 66 vw notch
2L kombi auto
1800 auto diff gears (4.360)
4000 rpm stall converter

13b cosmo, s4 rotors (8.4:1 comp)
Microtech Lt-8s
6 x 1700cc injectors
3 x 910 bosh fuel pumps
malpassi fuel reg
M/T street radials (275 or 235)

2 x garrett gt40 turbos with .96 to4 exhaust housings

What happened to the Splitty?

20bkombi - May 27th, 2012 at 07:27 PM

I have already started machining the exhaust housings and spacer plates. The gt40's come with 1.18 (45 style), with would be to big for what I need so i've machined the .96 (T04 style) housings to suit the bigger gt40 rear wheel. They needed 7.4mm spacers to mate them together.

The splitty will end up with my 20bt and a very custom vw 010 auto/9'' dif $$$$, The type 3 is for some fun and more R&D leading to the splitty. So the bus won't be for a while.

And I want a cheap kicker for now.:lol:

Looking froward to watching/reading about this notch coming together

Stanley - May 27th, 2012 at 07:56 PM

About freak in time Aaron. I've been posting type 3 pics to get you motivated. Will look forward to this.

Additionally, those rear over riders would look on my notch. Think of the weight saving....:D

Stanley - May 27th, 2012 at 08:24 PM

Yep...it's yours if you want it

Here's some pics of the spacers to fit the small housings on the gt40's

T04 exhaust housing fitted

this shows how much bigger they are over a single 13b turbo. Together they should get a 13b spinning!!!!

I machined and polished the compressors too.

I dont understand why people keep saying this

With the turbos done, I'll start porting the engine, and remove some of the 3er panels, interior, engine & box.

nbturbo - May 27th, 2012 at 10:37 PM

As usual top class stuff. Love looking at your work.

dangerous - May 28th, 2012 at 06:27 AM

Ah, good work dude,
I'll take that gearbox off your hans to help the funds department.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - May 28th, 2012 at 11:02 AM

So is the notch going to be flat black to keep it in the family so to speak LOL

Thanks Dave, every bit helps!

Stanley - May 29th, 2012 at 11:03 AM

what colour....flat black?

mackaymanx - May 29th, 2012 at 11:26 AM

I didn't think the 1800 auto(003) diff gears fitted the 2L auto. Are the pinion shaft interchangable or are you changing the pinion gears on the shaft?

20bkombi - May 29th, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Yep, mat black with orange roll cage, stripes and wheels.

I just use the 1800 crown wheel and the pinion gear, not the pinion shaft.
The 2L diff center has larger stub shafts and planetary gears.

humpty - June 4th, 2012 at 01:37 AM

Wow...... I am so looking forward to this project progressing.... Huge fan of TIII's and Notch's in particular.... Will be looking forward to seeing how you make the rear end work with a horsepower injection!

20bkombi - June 4th, 2012 at 08:33 AM

At the moment I'm thinking of removing the 1966 3er torsion tube with horns and using 70's wagon
Tube and torsion bars, and kombi axles and bearing housing with extended tube diagonal arms.
Also make the spring plates longer.
I'll start with kombi c/v's and go from there.

Sounds great :tu::tu:

Longer spring plates will require even bigger torsions (for your already heavier and more powerful engine).

20bkombi - June 4th, 2012 at 02:26 PM

Yeah I know, I was going to make the plates not much longer than stock length and cut the centre out of the torsion tube to allow the engine and box to go further forward shortening the bars, turning them down to get the right pressure.

I'll see when I do a dummy set up.

humpty - June 4th, 2012 at 03:20 PM

Why not forget about the torsions and the springplates all together?.... Just fit rose joint trailing links and coil shocks..... Much easier to tune the suspension then, and getting your toe angles bang on will be a snack!

Yes it would be easier but I don't have coil overs on the shelf, I do have torsion bars though!! :-) limited $$$

2442supercharged - June 4th, 2012 at 08:41 PM

do you think the kombi cv's will be enough for your horsepower
