Dual Batteries
71-BEETLE-SEDAN - August 24th, 2009 at 08:39 PM

I have a 71 bug with 2 12 inch subs running off a 5500watt amp with 4 6.5 inch speakers. I want to get some neons both inside and outside of the car. At the moment if i turn the stereo up at night witht the lights i all my lights dim with the music.

How can i stp this and would setting up a second battery be an option. Obviously the neons would only be for at shows but i wanna be able to show em off around town.

Your help is appreiated.

second batterys not gonna help

its just to much load for the stock generator
u need to upgrade to an alternator

a caps only a bandaid fix and will only kill the genny sooner
everytime it dischargers the genny has to work even harder to recharge it

You need an alternator...
to replace Your generator...

Neons won't make all that difference powerwise...

its the amplifiers that use all the power...

I don't use an amplifier... the standard JVC unit is loud enough for me...

If I turn the standard CD player in My Lancer up loud
the interior light fluctuates with the sound...

this was without the engine running...

My celica has a 12 month old alternator in it, i have a factory guage for it, and despite with the music loud and only a 280 watt sub amp, the headlights and lights in the guage cluster flicker.

its done it for ages now, and the battery still chargers, just the guage dips/bounces with the beat, while still being above the 14 volt mark. Only i seem to notice though, it couldn't be that bad to the other drivers after tailing a friend up the m1 home for 50 mins with it strobing and them not knowing what i was talking about.

It does get a little annoying though.

you can get different amp's of VW alternator..... :) talk to an auto elec about what would be best....
Car batteries aren't designed to run high output stereo's with the car not running..

A 5.5k amp? Thats pretty big!

What make / model is it?

cam070 - August 25th, 2009 at 01:32 AM

Does anyone sell alternators with higher output than standard that are a direct replacement for the standard units?

i think you will find thats a typo
my old install was only 1500W in total and was 3.7dB louder than a jumbo jet

5500w could send a bug into orbit

Cam, you can get 75amp alternators from most vw suppliers
i think even 90s are availble from the US
ive never had a problem with the stock 50amp not being suffeint

Apologies for hijacking this thread, but my generator light is dimly lit when I have the headlights on, so I was wondering if it was up the task is I added a bunch of other electrical gear, which is planned for down the track.

FYI I have a 76 Beetle presumably with a stock alternator.

Heres a pic, it is a cheap one off ebay, only cost bout fiftey bucks all up.

Does VW Make an alternator to fit the gen stand or is there modifications to do.

thats Taiwanese amps for ya

"suggested" max power 5500w
RMS probably more like 100w
but if it works alls good

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - August 25th, 2009 at 09:07 PM

yeah if it was realy 5500w prety sure my subs would be skrewd but now the gen to alt conversion is it possible to do myself and how expensive are the parts

capacitor.

vwvic - November 9th, 2009 at 10:47 PM

Get a capacitor. They keep the voltage up to the amp so it will put out less distortion.Less voltage = more distortion at lower volume levels.
