Radio Wiring
Mike - February 25th, 2010 at 07:21 PM

I want to install a head unit in my beetle but I'm not sure how to wire it in because the exsisting radio only has 2 wires.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram to wire in a radio to a s beetle?

Cheers
Mike

Hi

On supers and other flat screen bugs I've fitted a rocker switch in the square hole near fuse box as Bugs don't have an accessory position on the ignition switch. Just wire it up from a fuse with a battery feed and use the same fuse feed for the memory wire on the head unit.

Do you mean wire it up so that the radio can be used without the key in the ignition?

Hi

I find that's the best way, just fit the rocker switch to turn it off. If you think that you will never need to use your radio without the motor running then wire it through the ignition.

I'll have to think about it a bit because I'm paranoid that if I wire it to a switch I'll leave it on and end up with a flat battery.
If I was to wire through the ignition where would i be best off picking power as there isn't a power cable for the exsisting radio?

Hi

Put a test light on your fuse box to find a fuse that is ignition switch controlled, some have feature to turn off when cranking and other stay on when cranking, you would want one that turns off when cranking, this gives more power for starting.

I've never had a problem leaving the radio on, I usually play it loud and I would notice it when I turned the car off.

Hi,
I have installed a DVD player and it is wired so permament power always available. I find it works well as I can have it playing while ignition is off. Have never had a problem with battery running flat, even though watching TV or DVD for extended periods of time (1/2 hour or more). Also have never left unit on due to lights on head unit and the 'sound of music'.

i like Steve have put in a switch in my Kombi, just have constant power to your memory wire ,usually the yellow one and the red one switched and black to earth, just the main power wire is switched so i know the power is off whilst parked..

couldnt you have the switched wire off a + that rubs through the ignition? I know you wouldnt be able to run it while the car wasnt running? is the issue you can cook the coil if you keep the ignition on without running the engine?

yep you can burn out your points etc if ignition left onto run radio for a period of time
